Data is the assortment of facts and in nature is raw just describing states while information is the codified version of data that allows it to be processed (Johannessen et al., 2002). According to Johannessen et al. 2002, data can be expressed in units and is quantifiable but information is qualitative with the lack of data also showing some information. Knowledge can be described as synthesizing this information and has characteristics including cognitive learning, codifiable and tacit form, context dependant, and can be in a collective form (Hislop, 2013). According to Hislop 2013, knowledge is most important from a management and business perspective as current jobs are very knowledge-intensive and a knowledge base in the organization is a source of competitiveness.

As a professional in the wireless industry with expertise in test engineering knowledge management is a key part of the organization. Test plans are designed with a high level of knowledge in the system which is translated into test cases and steps as information and the expected results and key performance indicators as data which is the reverse application of knowledge in the core areas. Processing of test results is the application of knowledge by codifying data obtained for the system into information and using the information for knowledge on the health of the system.
