Persuasive Speech Guidelines1. Pick a RELEVANT TOPIC that really interests you – something you are passionate
about. If your topic is not of particular interest to you, it will be difficult to interest
and persuade your audience. ANALYZE YOUR AUDIENCE!
2. Study Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Monroe’s Motivated Sequence in your
textbook. View the examples given in this PERSUASION folder. You will utilize
these resources in the construction and delivery of your speech.
3. RESEARCH YOUR TOPIC THOROUGHLY. You are required to have a
minimum of three sources (expert opinions, magazines, periodicals, books, journals,
newspapers, etc.—NO WIKIPEDIA) that MUST BE CITED ORALLY IN THE
SPEECH AS WELL AS LISTED IN A BIBLIOGRAPHY AT THE END OF YOUR
OUTLINE.
4. Create a rough draft Persuasive Speech Outline (see the example in this folder).
5. FINE TUNE AND REWRITE YOUR OUTLINE as you continuously analyze the
best way to persuade your audience.
6. PRACTICE/REHEARSE THE DELIVERY OF YOUR SPEECH! Time your
speech—your time limit for this speech is 5-8 minutes.
7. Visual aids can enhance your speech, but they MUST NOT BE OVERPOWERING
TO THE SPEECH—what you say and how you use language to persuade us is
essential. YOU ARE THE STAR OF THIS SPEECH—NOT TECHNOLOGY!
