Content Lesson Guidelines (CL)
See syllabus for due dates
You will select a public speaking topic for your CL. You will thoroughly research this topic and
identify two to three main points to teach the class. You will need to construct a lesson on your
selected topic in its entirety. The lesson should be engaging and appealing to a multilevel
audience (grades 5-12). You will present this lesson more than once. Once to our class and the
second time to the CYI youth participants. In addition to preparing and executing your lesson, you
will also need to submit Written Materials (see below). Innovation and student engagement is
highly encouraged!
Content Lesson Project Elements:
❑ Practice Lesson (100 pts)
❑ Written Materials (125 pts)
❑ Final Lesson (200 pts)
Lesson Requirements
❑ Teach 2-3 main ideas that you find are most important within your topic
o You must assume that your audience knows nothing about your topic and
therefore must introduce them to your main points by defining them and
offering working examples.
❑ An Activity
o Try to keep your lecture between 8-9 minutes; the remaining time should be
spent completing a related activity and debriefing.
❑ Visual Aids must be used to support your presentation – be creative!
o Be prepared! Deductions will be taken due to lack of preparedness if you
experience equipment failure and do not have a back up.
❑ 15-18 minutes
Practice Content Lesson
❑ Your Practice Lesson will contain all of the elements your final lesson
❑ When you present your Practice Content Lesson you should be COMPLETELY ready
to go just as if you were presenting in front of the youth.
Written Materials (TWO COPIES on due date) All of the items are required
1. Lesson plan
2. Terms and definitions
3. Activity complete with description (provide a final copy of the activity that is ready
to use).
4. Handout for the students: Summarizes the main points of your lesson and includes
key words or phrases from your terms and definitions page. The students will keep a
copy of this.
5. Reference page
6. Two copies
Final Lesson
❑ Meets all criteria
❑ Evidence of practice and improvement
