During this week, we learned the importance of developing specific skills to help gather
information for news reports. Like any profession, there is a structure and set of skills a
journalist needs to be successful. Computer programmers must learn to code; firefighters must
learn how to operate pumps and fire hoses; a welder must know about bonding. The tools of
the journalism trade are just as important when it comes to delivering their product.
Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words:
Explain how a journalist prioritizes what information to share first, what information is most
relevant, and what information should be omitted from a report.
Think of a time when you began reading a news story and quickly became disinterested. Share
what attracted you to the story in the first place. Explain why you lost interest. Discuss how this
course can help you avoid losing your audience with poorly prioritized information in a news
story.
