Op-Ed
write an argument
Writing an opinion piece is a good way to practice stating and supporting an argument.
You have a lot of leeway in choosing your topic for this assignment, but it must relate to food or cooking. For example, you could argue that warnings about excess salt in the diet are misguided; that coffee drinking contributes to a loss of biodiversity; that concerns about saturated fat in our diets are based on faulty science; that warnings about the risks of carcinogens in grilled meats aren’t strong enough. These are just examples – what do you feel strongly about?
Choose a clear position on this issue – e.g., are you for, or against the development of meat alternatives? Write an Op-Ed in which you state and defend your position. Your goal is to persuade readers to adopt your point of view. To be successful you must show readers that are knowledgeable about the topic, and that your point of view is supported by experts. You also need to show that you understand counter-arguments, and then explain why those opposing views are misguided.
To accomplish these goals your opinion piece should cite authoritative sources, include some technical details about your topic, and present contrasting views.
