This assignment provides a “base line” that will demonstrate your business communication skills as they stand
at the beginning of the semester. Throughout the semester, we will be honing the variety of skills needed to
create an effective message for the scenario used in this assignment. Throughout the semester, we will return to
your Initial Assessment Message to measure your skill development.
Scenario / Prompt
Imagine… You work for a company called BK Consulting in an entry-level role of your choice. Recently you
received the following message from the Human Resources Department:
Dear BK Consulting Employees,
For the past 8 years, your recommendations have helped BK Consulting to donate to impactful charities
with the funds raised during our annual picnic. Together, we have been able to make a difference in our
community—from supporting the local food bank to contributing to national non-profits that are active
in our community, and more.
Please help us select the charity or nonprofit that we will support through our next fundraising picnic.
Through our annual picnic, BK Consulting donates approximately $8500 each year. Our past donations
have enabled nonprofits to do things like provide over 25,000 meals to local residents, refurbish three
local playgrounds, provide over 500 hotel stays for those traveling for medical treatment, and more.
Your recommendation will enable us to make another meaningful contribution to our community.

selecting an appropriate nonprofit or charity, you will need to make some additional decisions, such as your
entry-level position title, the format you will use to send this message, whether supporting documents or links
may be needed, and so on. Consider also what information your receiver would like and would need to select
your recommended organization.
