Design Project 5: Magazine/Photo Essay

Objective: Apply design skills to a project using InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

Assignment: Design and edit a 12-page magazine with original content. You must create your own, new magazine. You must shoot all of your photos. You must have a cover, and design ads for the inside front cover, inside back cover, and back cover. Design a table of contents for page 3 with a masthead (you can included references to non-existent content). Pages 4-10 should have editorial content. You may use these as you wish, whether as a photo essay or multiple stories. You may use filler text, if you like, or you may use work from Media Writing, Reporting, etc. Headlines, cutlines, subheadlines, infographics, etc. must be real. You also need to include at least one original infographic/alternative story form in the magazine.

Design a magazine cover for a title of your choosing. Be as detailed as you would need to be for printing an actual magazine. Shoot the photo yourself and write teaser copy for headlines.

SPECS: 8.5”x11” with bleeds as needed. Select two-page spreads in InDesign when building the document.

Turn assignment in as a InDesign package to Design Project 5 Dropbox folder on Blackboard. Name files and your folder Lastname_Firstname_DP5. You must turn in all documents as named for credit. You will need to compress the file.

100-word artist statement is REQUIRED with this design. Artist statement must be posted in the “Comments” section of the assignment. Discuss the design decisions you made and why you made them.
