please respond to the following discussion post as a peer making a comment. Many different ethical dilemmas can be found in healthcare. One of the bigger ones I see is establishing boundaries with patients. In my career, I have seen so many nurses get too comfortable with patients. Recently, I overheard a nurse talking to a patient about the bar they frequent, and they should meet up when the patient is discharged. Duquesne University says, “Patients should not rely on nurses beyond their professional capacity and should not develop romantic relationships with them or offer them gifts” (Duquesne University, 2020). I have also seen nurses go to group homes to visit former patients and buy them things. As a healthcare worker, setting boundaries with co-workers and patients is essential. Patients are there to receive the care they need. A situation like this could be resolved by the nursing manager getting involved and explaining why boundaries are put in place. The nursing management and staff members need to work on a plan to make sure that boundaries are not crossed. Many times, people do not even realize they are crossing a boundary, and when crossing that boundary, it could give the patient the wrong idea. Working together as a team and determining how you can help a patient without crossing boundaries is essential. Looking at my previous example of meeting up at a bar/restaurant, the nurse could instead provide the patient with support groups they can attend.
