The main way I will make my speech have a greater sense of professionalism is by using verbal citations. I have no professional or educational expertise with the topic I’m covering, so it’s important to build credibility by citing real experts in the field. Something I know that will make my speech less professional appearing is the use of filler words such as uh and um. Since I know I often use these filler words it’s something I’m going to try and consciously improve on for the recording. Vocal tone is another large contributing factor to how professional something sounds. I will try and speak clearly, loudly, and be confident in the things I am sharing. I want to show that real research has gone into the speech through my vocal confidence.

The biggest piece of advice that will be helpful for me is monitoring the rate at which I’m talking, and allowing non-vocalized pauses to be present. I often talk too quickly which is bad for multiple reasons. For one it makes the content I’m sharing denser and less digestible for listeners, with no break for comprehension. This means if you don’t understand something right away you have no chance to understand and catch up, and I end up leaving the listener behind. Secondly, it doesn’t allow myself time to think about what I will be saying next. This makes it so I’m giving a speech in a sort of panicked state, coming up with what I will be saying almost as I’m saying it. This obviously leads to more mistakes, and more filler words being used as I’m not 100% confident in what I will be saying next. Slowing the rate at which I will talk will make my presentation much more clear.
