Not all teams progress through these stages the same way

Stage1: Forming — the team is created and organized.

Team members get to know one another, establish first impressions

Begin to gauge time and energy needed to expend on the team tasks.

Stage 2: Storming — introduction of conflict/disagreement between team members

The team begins to outline what the group should look like — What goals should we pursue: How should we pursue them.

Opinions will differ in how to accomplish goals.

Successful teams are able to deal with task and relationship conflict effectively.

Stage 3: Norming — agreement on group goals as well as how to best accomplish those goals

Team members understand their role as well as the roles of others in the group.

Stage 4: Performing — commitment to goals as well as one another leads to highest levels of performance

Stage 5: Adjourning — team disbands.
