Oakland Community College Beneficial Bacteria in Human Life Essay
1Beneficial Bacteria in Human Life
Beneficial Bacteria in Human Life
Title of the speech: Beneficial Bacteria in Human Life
Specific purpose: This speech aims to inform my audience about bacteria’s various beneficial
roles in peoples’ lives.
Central Idea: The central idea of this speech is that bacteria can benefit our lives and that it is
essential to understand the positive roles that bacteria play for us to appreciate the complexity of
our world.
INTRODUCTION
Today, to introduce the topic, I would like to ask my audience a few questions. What do
you think of when you hear the word bacteria? Do you think of something harmful or something
beneficial?
In this speech, I will discuss bacteria’s beneficial roles.
The significance of this topic is in relation to the many strange diseases that are emerging
and which are associated with the destruction of essential bacteria in human bodies. In addition,
exploring the beneficial roles of bacteria can help people to understand how to better use them
for the benefit of humanity.
My credibility in this topic comes from my biology background and interest in studying
microorganisms. Moreover, I have researched this topic extensively to better understand the
beneficial roles of bacteria.
2
Furthermore, in this speech, I will address several main points, including; bacteria not
visible with the naked eye, cannot be washed, their importance to humans, and the overall
importance of bacteria to the environment.
I will start with the visibility of bacteria.
BODY
I.
There are so many bacteria, but they cannot be seen with the naked human eye (Yamket
et al.,2023).
A. Though bacteria can be highly concentrated, they cannot be seen because they are so
tinny. Therefore, making it difficult for the eye to identify them.
1) To be able to see the bacteria, visual aid instruments like microscopes are used. The
microscope has a high magnification power, thus making the specimen of the bacteria
large enough to be seen through the lens.
B. The bacteria cannot also be scrubbed off from the hands.
1) The daily activities using our hands contaminates us with all types of bacteria.
2) However, because of their tiny size and their chemical composition, it becomes hard to
scrub the bacteria off the skin when they attach to the skin.
3) That entails my first point on the visibility of the bacteria. Now, let us move to the second
point.
II.
Research indicates that most bacteria cannot be washed away (Wang et al., 2021).
A) Some bacteria have tough membranes that soaps cannot dissolve.
3
1) The bacteria that cannot be washed are just left contaminating the skin or any other
surface where they are attached, even after it has been washed. These unwashed bacteria
are multiplied and spread to other surfaces or people’s skin.
A. However, there are those bacteria that can be washed with detergents.
1) Detergents, particularly ones containing antibacterial agents, can remove some bacteria
but not kill them. Washing is required to remove these microorganisms.
Moving to the third point;
III.
Some bacteria are especially important and beneficial for humans and the environment
(Bermúdez-Humarán, 2019).
A. There are so many vital bacteria in the body of human beings that play vital roles in the
body’s functioning.
1) Many vital bacteria are recognized as contributing to the survival of humans and animals
in the digestive and immunological systems.
B. In agriculture and food production, bacteria have been identified to be useful and play a
significant role.
1) Nitrogen-fixing bacteria help fix nitrogen in the soil and boost production.
To my fourth and last point for today;
IV.
Bacteria are important in society today (Khan et al., 2019).
A. Economic development
4
1) Bacteria are used in several industries in many diverse ways. For instance, they can be
used in fermentation, hence, helping in the creation of employment and new industries.
That was all that was on my topic for today. I can therefore conclude my speech and am ready to
review what we have learned in my conclusion.
CONCLUSION
I.
Bacteria are invisible to the naked eye; thus, people need a microscope. In addition,
we have seen that some bacteria cannot be washed, not even with detergents.
However, some bacteria are important to man and the environment. Moreover, I have
noted that bacteria are important in the economy, especially in manufacturing
industries.
II.
It is, therefore, true, and I hope that from this day on, you will agree with me that
there are important bacteria for man and the environment which should be
appreciated.
