Elite Private School
Chemistry Project T1
Subject:
Grade Level: 12
CHEMISTRY
Project Correlation: Energy and Chemical Change
Name: Unit project on Matter, Energy
and Equilibrium
Standard: HS-PS1.A, HS-PS3.A, HSPS3.B
Objectives:
✓ Students will connect energy to the incineration of waste
✓ Students will be able to indicate the pros and cons of energy production by incinerating
waste.
Due Date: 21/11/2022
Introduction
Energy is the ability to do work or produce heat. This exist in two basic forms: potential and kinetic energy.
Chemical systems contain potential energy and these are stored in chemical bonds. When reactions occur, these
bonds are broken and the energy converted to kinetic energy. Endothermic reactions and Exothermic reactions
are the two types of reaction that involve the absorption or emission of energy in the form of heat. Enthalpy
change (∆H) highlights this during a chemical reaction.
Entropy indicates the state of randomness or disorder in a chemical system. A change in entropy (∆S) indicates
an increase or decrease in entropy within a chemical reaction.
Description
Two problems with which many cities have to deal today are how to get rid of solid wastes and how to obtain
energy. Incinerating waste can solve both of these problems at once, although not without creating some other
problems. In your research, you will write about the advantages and disadvantages of incinerating waste. Your
research should also have connections to the concepts found in topics on energy, heat, enthalpy and entropy
changes.
Guidelines
Your PowerPoint slides should contain the following information:
1. The cover page, which should contain the class, topic and names of the students that were involved in
the project.
2. In 2 to 4 slides, introduce the nature of waste materials and how they are usually processed. You should
also include images and diagrams (and videos if possible).
3. In 2 to 5 slides, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of incinerating waste to produce energy. In
your discussion, include connections to concepts on heat, energy, enthalpy and entropy changes. You
should also include images and diagrams (and videos if possible).

4. In 1 to 2 slides, discuss recommendations that can be used to process waste that can be beneficial to the
environment.
5. In 1 slide, write your references
You should have a minimum of 7 slides. Your report should have A MAXIMUM OF 4 STUDENTS.
