Statistics Question
Assignment Content
This week you will continue to build your course project/mock study by completing a worksheet on mean, median, and mode. Understanding how to calculate and interpret the mean, median, and mode of data is important because it allows for understanding key elements of central tendency, averages, etc. along with potential outliers or skewed data.

and Mode
Complete Parts A and B below.
Part A
Using the three variables you chose in Week 1, complete the following for each of your variables:
1. Using Excel, calculate the mean, median, and mode for each variable.
2. Create APA formatted tables to represent the mean, median, and mode of each variable. Copy
and paste each table below.
3. Explain/summarize the output for each variable.
Note: You might have to recode your variables prior to completing this assignment. See Calculating
Mean, Median, and Mode in Excel for the step-by-step process.

Calculating Mean, Median, and Mode in Excel
Note: If you are using a variable in words (rather than numbers) you will need to recode your variable
prior to calculating the mean, median, and mode this week.
Recoding in Excel
•
•
Go to your first row of data.
Select the =IF function.
=IF(A2
This is the cell we want to recode.
=IF(A2, “Male”, 1, 0)
So here we are saying if A2 is male, then 1, or if not male, then 0.

Then we need to copy and paste this for all our variables. To do so, highlight the new cell and click copy
(which will copy the formula).
Then, highlight the rest of the column and click paste.

Now we have recoded “Sex” to binary variables (1,0).
Now we can run the descriptive statistics (mean, median, mode, etc.).
Highlight the data to include.
Select Data, then Data Analysis.
Next, select Descriptive Statistics and OK.
For input range, you’ll need to highlight the column you want to run and follow checkmarks for the rest of
the illustration below under Output options, and then click OK.
