USC Hybrid High School story from childhood Discussion
Part #1: In an academic paragraph (5-7 sentences), discuss your favorite story from childhood: who were the characters, was there conflict between them, how did the story end? In a 2nd academic paragraph (5-7 sentences), discuss why you liked the story and what you gleaned from it that imprinted it within you.
Part #2: Respond to 2 other student posts in a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) and let them know why their story would interest you. State 2-4 reasons stating you liked the story.
1. My favorite childhood story would have to be The Chronicles of Narnia; the Lion, the Witch, and the
Wardrobe. The characters were the four Pevensie children all ranging in ages from child to young adult. There
was conflict between the siblings that is understandable such as sibling rivalry, jealousy, and the children
trying to acclimate to their new home. Their previous home was in a war zone so the eldest son Peter, took it
upon himself to get the other children to act more grown up which is part of a theme in the story as one of the
main characters, Lucy, discovers a fantasy land. There is also conflict in the fantasy land, Narnia, where there
is a ongoing war between the balance of good and evil. The story ends with the White Witch being killed and
with that the children and citizens of Narnia restore good.
I say Narnia because it was my first book that made me think that alternate worlds could be p ossible. I knew
cartoons weren’t real and Disney fantasies weren’t plausible, but Narnia took ordinary children to a different
place that was hidden right where they lived. I liked the idea of the possibility that I could go to Narnia or at
least be ready to go whenever Narnia deemed it was my time. Narnia to me seemed less far fetched than most
of the children books.
2. My favorite story comes from the movie The Lion King. Most people are aware of this Disney movie on how
Simba avenges his father, Mufasa, and takes back Pride Rock from his evil uncle Scar. Simba gets help from
his childhood friend Nala and from friends he made along the way like Timon and Pumba. Simba runs away
in fear after witnessing his father’s death while Scar takes over their kingdom. Simba later returns to take back
the kingdom that his father, Mufasa, had watched over and bring peace back in the animal kingdom.
What I really liked about this story as a child was one, it was a Disney animated movie. I also like how the
main characters were animals and the songs were quite catchy. As I got older, I began to see the theme of
trying to run away from the past and it catching up to you. There are things we may have avoided from our
past that at some point we may have to deal with it. It could be from a loss of a family member or even a
responsibility that one must perform. I also liked that Simba grew up in the movie and matured when he goes
back to face Scar to take back Pride Rock. It expresses character development which I enjoyed watching both
as a kid and as an adult.
