This week we are tasked with discussing the advantages of containerization in Maritime Shipping. After watching the video provided in this week’s lesson and research through the web, using containers for the transportation of goods via ships is very cost effective. It gives companies the ability and flexibility to standardize the industry by transporting containers that can easily be handled by any Port in the world. It also provides a company with the ability to transport a variety of items from cars, television sets, liquids, refrigerated cargo, and hundreds of other products.  

Another advantage ports have over other shipping modes is the ability to reduced the amount of space a company needs to store cargo. Due to the standardization of containers, ports can easily stack up to 5 containers at a time. Not only do they minimize the amount of space required to store products but some ports have reduced the turnaround time from 3 weeks to as low as 24 hours.

One factor people forget when transporting goods in containers through ships, is the safety and security of the product. The contents of each container is not know by the carriers. The containers can only be opened by the seller and the buyer. This check and balances helps reduced losses associated with the.

In closing, Maritime Shipping of containers is not only a cost effective way for companies to ship products across the world, but it’s also safe and secure enough that your goods are most likely to make it to it’s destination without a glitch. Regarding this week’s forum topic, we are discussing containerization in maritime shipping and any possible parallels with the air freight industry. Containerization, which is shipping goods stored within a container, is an efficient way to transport goods internationally and on the water. Container sizes vary but are often either 20 or 40 feet in size. They allow for blocking and bracing to ensure nothing moves during transportation which offers added security to an enclosed unit.

In the maritime industry, containerization has revolutionized the way they transport goods and materials. With universal interlocking containers, cranes are utilized to efficiently stack containers on to maritime vessels. This allows for maximized storage and increases deliveries. Ships are loaded to capacity and are a frequent sight along any coastal area. One parallel the maritime industry has to the air freight industry are the use of universal containers. This makes shipping even more efficient, since containers do not have to be broken down or repackaged, just moved to the next method of transportation. Containerization offers a huge advantage to shipping and transportation industries around the globe.

Overall, containerization has been a huge revolution in the maritime and air freight industry. It will be interesting to see further developments and if there are any changes to the practice of using containers.
