1. Explain how self-perception impacts your communication decisions. Why is it important to focus on your skills
for perceiving others when you are making decisions for step 2 in DECIDE? Include specific examples.
2. Within the various models of communication described in your text, there are a few standard components
(source, receiver, channel, context, and noise). Think about experiences you have had with noise (or interference)
in the communication process. Write a unique example of noise for each of the other components in the
communication model (sender, receiver, channel, and context). These four examples can be from different reallife communication situations, but they need to be different from the examples in the textbook. Select one of the
four examples you provided and indicate how you could reduce or eliminate the noise.
3. There are three parts in the definition of Communication Competence. (See Communication in the Real World:
An Introduction to Communication Studies, Chapter 1.4 Communication Competence) Which one of these parts
do you think you most often accomplish or are most successful? Why? Which one do you feel you need to give
the most attention for improving your skills? Why? Give specific examples.
4. Describe the six principles of communication. (See Communication in the Real World: An Introduction to
Communication Studies, 1.3 Communication Principles) Of these, which do you believe has the most effect on
the communication decisions you make as the sender? Why? Give specific examples.
5. DECIDE is the acronym used to remember the six basic steps that you must consider when you are the sender
and are making communication decisions. Step 1 of DECIDE is to define the communication goal. Why would it
be important, especially in the transaction model of communication , for the sender to define his / her
communication goal? Use at least three specific key terms from this lesson in your explanation.
