COM 3150: BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONWriting Exam
Directions:
You are a Department manager of a company of your choice and you will need to submit a
memorandum to your team illustrating a change in current policy. However, this change is not a
positive one, rather you are taking away one of their current benefits.
Currently, the employees on your team can work remotely (at-home) three days out of the
week, which is a huge benefit. However, your company has shifted upper management, and
have decided that employees should work remotely only one day a week. It is up to you to
decide whether or not you want to specify the day of the week or let your employees decide.
Think about what would work best for your team and the company.
Guidelines:
This should be no longer than one-page and submitted as a memorandum, please refer to
Chapter 9: Writing Correspondence for guidance.
Grading Criteria:
Your written exam will be graded on four criteria, which include:
1. Format: Have you followed the proper memorandum format? This means there are
proper headings, spacing, paragraph breaks, and margins. (2 points)
2. Organization: Have you considered the professional tone in your message? Will it be a
direct or indirect message? This means that there are cogent ideas, logically developed
paragraphs, comprehensive content, and effective transitions. (2 points)
3. Language, Spelling, and Grammar: This means that you have included varied and
effective sentence structure; concise, clear, courteous, and correct language. (2 points)
4. Punctuation: Evidence of careful proofreading. Errors do not interfere with
comprehension and do not negatively influence the reader’s perception of the writer.
