Hi Class,

First, I want to say that I have enjoyed this class and will take the information that I have learned with me . The two types of families I chose to write about are foster families and step families. Foster homes have given many children a family. Any parent has a great impact on a child’s personality and development. A foster family can eliminate behavioral problems, and can give a child physical and mental guidance. This is if they get to stay in one home. Many people believe that they stay in one home but most bounce from home to home. When the child is uprooted repeatedly they are also being moved from school to school and this can cause them to get behind academically.   There are contradictory findings about step families. Some studies say step families are at greater risks of being dysfunctional than the nuclear family. Children from step families are twice as likely to suffer from behavioral problems, are likely to leave home earlier, and achieve less academically. Also they are more prone to stress . But other studies say that marital conflict and poor marital adjustment is the key to understanding why children have behavioral issues. Children are generally resilient to changes in marital status. They may have temporary problems in shifting from one family to another but should adjust. It is up to the adults to control their tempers and show the children how to adjust. A few things I take away from this class is facts about parenting birth to five years. This is really coming in handy for me right now. I learned about different types of families. I also learned that no matter what type of family, we all have the same thing in common. That one thing is ,the well being of our children.
