CASE ANALYTSIS
CUSTOMER INFORMATION SYSTEMS & COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
Learning Objectives
A major objective of this course is to foster critical and analytical thinking, while applying concepts and techniques
from many topics spread throughout the prescribed textbook and other information sources in order to solve
organizational problems. Responses to this case do not wholly depend on students focusing on a specific chapter
for a specific case. Instead, the case requires a holistic application of topics broadly discussed throughout the
book. It may also be necessary to conduct research to support responses.
Organizational Perspective
The primary aim is to identify problems or issues that could be resolved using theories and lessons from the
course to solve related organizational issues. Here we consider 

Business objective – improving decision making
Business skills – evaluating business problems and identifying solutions
A new information system changes the way the organization operates and successful organizations choose to
change their structure and operations over time. They choose information systems designed to mirror
organizational changes. New systems can change organizational political arrangements and power relationships.
The information systems plan is the first step to link the business plan to information systems. The information
systems plan helps an organization answer such questions as what needs to be done, who needs the information,
who creates the system, and finally how can a system be created that will change existing strategy or even the
current line of business.
Many times senior managers, especially those outside the IT division/department, don’t understand how their
actions or in-actions affect the success of IT projects. And often many organizations’ projects have failed because
the behavioral changes the new system would necessitate were not anticipated.
