College of The Muscogee Nation Positive Emotional Effect Discussion Questions
EXERCISE 4.2
PROFILE THE PROCESS OF EFFECTS ON YOU
Think of a media effect that altered your behavior. (Perhaps you watched a violent movie and
started behaving aggressively immediately afterward. Or perhaps you saw an ad for a product
and immediately went to the store to buy it.)
Look at the list of seven baseline factors presented in this chapter and write a profile of your
baseline for that behavioral effect.
Write a profile using the six fluctuation factors presented in this chapter to identify a media
message that would result in a large fluctuation spike through the manifestation level.
Think about a cognitive effect (refer to the previous chapter and Appendix B on Media Literacy,
10th edition’s Edge site at http://sagepub.com). Construct a baseline for yourself on that effect.
How close is your baseline to a manifestation level?
If the cognitive effect you selected is a positive one, what can you do to move your baseline
closer to the manifestation level?
If the cognitive effect you selected is a negative one, what can you do to move your baseline
further away from the manifestation level?
Think about a negative attitude you have experienced. Construct a baseline for yourself on that
effect.
What can you do to move your baseline further away from the manifestation level?
Profile the kind of media messages you should avoid in order to prevent a fluctuation from
breaking through the manifestation level.
Think about a positive emotional effect. Construct a baseline for yourself on that effect.
What can you do to move your baseline closer to the manifestation level?
Profile the kind of media messages you should seek out in order to ensure that a fluctuation off
your baseline would break through the manifestation level.
Think about other positive and negative effects using the four dimensions presented in the
previous chapter. Then for each of those effects profile your baseline,
profile media messages that would create larger fluctuations, and
profile media messages that would lead to smaller fluctuations.
Exercise 14.2 Profile the Process of Effects on You
1. Think of a media effect that altered your behavior. (Perhaps you watched a violent movie and
started behaving aggressively immediately afterward. Or perhaps you saw an ad for a product
and immediately went to the store to buy it.)
a. Look at the list of seven baseline factors presented in this chapter and write a profile
of your baseline for that behavioral Effect.
– Developmental Maturity: when I was younger, I allowed my performance in
activities like sports or video games to dictate my behavhiors and emotions more
strongly than how they influence how i act and feel now
– Cognitive Abilities: sometimes I dont understnd why I might lose my temper, but
strengthening my cognitive abilities will help me recognize such
– Knowledge Structures: now that I am more informed and knowledgeable being
an adult and not a adolescent, I understand and consider the perspectives of
many angles before forming a conclusion. This is only occurring because I am
more knowledgeable about the other perspectives that exists aside from my own.
– Sociological Factors: because of many values instilled by me by my family,
academic institutions, and friends, I have always kept certain values
untouchable, where regardless of a media advertisement, it is unlikely for my
opinion to change when given new information
– Lifestyle: the older I have become, the more exposed I have been to life. This
calls for more learning experiences, lessons, and ways for me to improve from
my mistakes. A story like forgetting my shoes to a basketball tournament will
forever live on onside me, reminding me to always triple-check my belongings
before I leave to go somewhere.
– Personal Locus: a strong personal locus is one that is very aware, and
knowledgeable of their susceptibility to certain perceptions. I think with age and
education, it’s easier to strengthen a perosnal locus, simply because of our
exposure to different experiences, events, and lessons
– Media Exposure Habits: the manner and frequency we consume media,
influences how it impacts us, and I think my addiction to my cell phone is a direct
product of that, because I can’t do a lot of things without my phone on me
b. Now write a profile using the six fluctuation factors presented in this chapter to identify
a media message that would result in a large fluctuation spike through the manifestation level.
– Content of Messages: what media we consume and the quantity of which also
plays a tremendous role in our baseline level, because those habits set the
standard for what we consider normal, as it’s ingrained in our daily routines
– Ad that targets cell phone usage, addiction, young generation
– Context of Portrayals: good labeled green, bad labeled red,
– Ad that portrays harmful effects in black and white, or red colors, but
positive effects in green, yellow, outdoors, nature, sunshine

Cognitive Complexity of Content- emotional triggers and colors, visuals sounds,
words, all three
– Ad that uses colors, images, and text to spark an emotional interest
Moitvations: what we want to seek // to learn
– Depicting a similar goal that the audience would feel, joining the NBA
States – temporary drives, emotional reaction, arousal, attention
– Loud or popular music with fast transition scenes to draw attention
Degree of Identifcation – attachment, relation, connection
– Ad that connects with people by depicting a particular community (chess
players, gamers, gymnasts)
2. Think about a cognitive effect (refer to the previous chapter and Appendix B for choices).
Construct a baseline for yourself on that effect. How close is your baseline to a manifestation
level? If the cognitive effect you selected is a positive one, what can you do to move your
baseline closer to the manifestation level? If the cognitive effect you selected is a negative one,
what can you do to move your baseline further away from the manifestation level?
– Generalization: by moving t closer to the manifestation level, I should pay close attention
to the situation I have memorized in my head, and be careful only to generalize that
situation when a new event mimics and replicates that situation perfectly, with closely
resembling details
3. Think about a negative attitude you have experienced. Construct a baseline for yourself on
that effect. What can you do to move your baseline further away from the manifestation level?
Profile the kind of media messages you should avoid in order to prevent a fluctuation off your
baseline breaking through the manifestation level.
– By distracting myself with other thoughts, tasks, or ideas I would defract my negative
attitude by bridging in external stimuli. Essentially, I would no focus on the cause of my
negative emotion and try my best to drown it out. Media messages with violence,
conflict, or any frustration should be as far as possible if I want to avoid getting angrier.
4. Think about a positive emotional effect. Construct a baseline for yourself on that effect.
What can you do to move your baseline closer to the manifestation level? Profile the kind of
media messages you should seek out in order to ensure that a fluctuation off your baseline
would break through the manifestation level.
– To move closer to the manifestation effect, I could think about all the other things left for
me on my plate, and not just the thing that gave me positivity. Life isn’t jst one thing, and
by preparing for a bunch of complexities I would be better off to face other situations.
While this would lessen my emotional positivity, it would bring me closer to my
manifestation level. Media messages with signs of happiness, celebration, or joy would
likely multiply my emotion, so I should stay away from overzealous exposures to media.
5. Think about other positive and negative effects using the four dimensions presented in the
previous chapter. Then do the following for each of those effects: Profile your baseline. Profile
media messages that would create larger fluctuations. Profile media messages that would lead
to smaller fluctuations.

Cognitive: positive effects: finding “flow” while working or studying
– Baseline: regular state of concentration/focus
– Larger fluctuations: stopping tasks, changing focus
– Smaller fluctuations: increase of background noise,
Emotional: negative effects: sense of failure and uselessness after failing exam
– Baseline: composure after finding test results
– Larger fluctuations: the class is super important, the class cannot be made up,
large portion of grade
– Smaller fluctuations: you did better than “average score”, you get an A on next
homework
Aesthetic: you come home after a long day to your living room being a mess
– Baseline: the atmosphere and ambiance of your space is interrupted
– Larger fluctuations: you take a step and mess up the room even more, you can’t
find your valuable belongings, your dog rips up more pillows
– Smaller fluctuations: all the paintings are no longer hanging up
Moral: your friend fights someone who assaulted a woman
– Baseline: you are in a moral dilemma of whether or not to support your friend
– Larger fluctuations: the friend ends up killing the woman
– Smaller fluctuations: the assaulter submits and does not want to fight

Complete the Profile the Process Effects on You
Assignment (14.2)
1. A media effect that altered my behavior is seeing online marketing for a kpop album that
had a lot of inclusions and deciding to buy it.
a. Sociological factors: I have been constantly exposed to the marketing, there are
weeks and weeks of teaser images, videos, track videos that preceded the album
release. Also, everyone around me was also buying the album therefore I wanted
to buy it as well.
b. State: I felt bored with my life, therefore I wanted to purchase something that I
thought would excite me. Collecting photocards is a hobby many people have
and that brings them a lot of excitement since each album comes with a
randomized card, and I thought it would bring me exqual excitement as well.
2. Cognitive effect: these kpop idols are physically attractive, successful, funny, and
marketed in a way that shows them to be good people, role models. I observed these
models, became attached to them, leading me to want to follow them.
a. My baseline is pretty far from the manifestation level. I no longer want to buy
more albums since I didn’t really like the one I bought, and collecting objects
does not give me joy. I also would not want to see them in concert.
3. A negative attitude I have experienced is growing up in a Catholic household. It made
me close-minded about social issues.
a. I move my baseline away by educating myself about social issues and how
people can be affected by wrongful stereotypes.
b. I should avoid media messages like going to church.
4. A positive emotional effect is learning how to be more professional through joining a
professional business fraternity.
a. I can actively work on getting new job experiences and reaching out to people
more experienced than I am to garner advice.
b. Positive media messages would be professional workshops and LinkedIn posts
to motivate me.
5. Four dimensions
a. Time
i.
Baseline has random spikes
ii.
Media messages about people being more productive than me would
create more fluctuations
iii.
Media messages that are about self care would have smaller fluctuations.
b. Valence
i.
Baseline is very random
ii.
Media messages about current events, social issues, big news would
create large fluctuations
iii.
Media messages about mundane things like celebrity lives or games
