Identify Directions for Critical Organizational Research and the Role of the Fully Engaged Scholar

The purpose of this activity is to identify an organizational issue (important to you or otherwise) and to suggest how a critical approach might shed light on this issue. First, identify the problem/issue. As you learned, critical approaches are concerned primarily with power, oppression, and emancipation issues. Is there a particular issue that is important to you, generally or specifically? Second, outline how a particular critical lens might help illuminate this organizational issue (e.g., feminism, post-structuralism, postmodernism, Marxism, queer theory). Third, outline how you might approach this issue as a fully engaged organizational communication scholar. Choose one of the modes (care, thought, good humour) as outlined by Deetz (2005) and explain how you might approach your identified issue in both its weak and strong modes.
