Personal Narrative

Write a personal narrative based on a memory or event that you consider important or meaningful.

The main purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate important writing skills like: 1) the ability to develop rich and interesting descriptive prose, 2) the ability to develop depth and insight through perceptive or evaluative commentary, and 3) the ability to build cohesion and meaning through different literary or dramatic elements (e.g. the use and development of characters, events, settings, plotting, themes, and/or figurative devices).

This assignment emphasizes a more creative approach to writing. This means that there is more flexibility in terms of its organization, but there still needs to be a clear sense of focus and purpose to your ideas.

You are welcome to describe any memory or event that you would like (and feel comfortable sharing). It can be something very specific or something more abstract. Either way, though, your narrative should do more than merely recount a series of details. It should also explain the significance of those details. In doing this the narrative should also aim to engage the reader’s interest and develop a demonstrative overall impression.

STORYLINE: Write about a girl that flies to America for the first time for studies. She get stuck at the boarder and they refer to her as Miss Louis Vuitton, the boarder at LAX is very strict and she ends up in something called the green room where she gets interviewed about her stay and studies. The room is filled with white papers with the no phone sign. After what felt like an eternity she gets let out. After that experience she realizes that boarders are not just for passing, they can also be a scary experience.
