Syllabus info: Prospectus: Short literature review/narrative context/research question paper as a prospectus for main paper

This assignment is designed to help you clarify and begin work (and get helpful input and feedback) on your main independent research paper/chapter—to enable you to develop a working knowledge of your topic.

3 double-spaced pages plus a working bibliography of around 5 key topical and methodological sources.

Parts of the short paper:

Contextualize your topic in terms of you as the researcher. Why this topic, and what is your working title for the chapter/paper?

Contextualize the topic in the existing literature and in the field of health communication (what’s out there currently on this or related topics? Who is writing about this? What organizations are advocating in this topic area, etc.?) Include an APA formatted list of around 5 key research sources/scholars you will use as a base in your chapter paper (part 2).

Contextualize the topic in practice areas of health comm: messaging, interaction, experience, or combination of these (which will you evoke/focus on)

Develop a research question/purpose statement and clear sense of what you are looking for (what will you make the narrative(s) say/show?)

Explain your plan for additional narrative research in order to complete part 2? Whose narrative(s) will you collect? Do you have relevant permissions if needed? What type of narratives (multiple people, one other person, personal/autoethnography/online); In order to find out what? How will you collect them? What do you expect to find? Which chapter(s) from the books will it look most like as a final product?

Include a working bibliography of around 5 key research and supporting sources especially in comm field (what main sources will you anchor your paper in? these can include chapters from our books). These sources might model your format and narrative approach, theory framing, topic area you will add to with your research, etc. Indicate also what, if any, input/advice you would like from me.
