CST 229 American College of California Ethnocentrism Paper

Please read the “ethnocentrism file” and prepare the two parts assignments.

Part One:

Find an article, news clipping, You-Tube video, etc. that relates to the concept of ethnocentrism. The article you select should clearly identify some of the key issues discussed in class related to intercultural communication and ethnocentrism. Please be prepared to share the article via Zoom during our next class session. You will need to give a 1-2 minute overview of the article for class discussion.

Part Two:

Prepare a 1 to 2 page summary that introduces your article and the problem you have identified within the text (video, book, magazine, etc.) Explain how intercultural communication ideas such as generalization can be used to address the issue of concern implied in the article. This portion of the assignment along with the link to the article or video should be submitted to Canvas by the due date.

Ethnocentrism Student Article
Ethnocentrism represents an evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions
originating in the standards and customs of one’s own culture. Basic characteristics of
ethnocentrism often include:
a strong sense of belonging to an ethnic group.
patriotism and national awareness
a feeling of superiority towards other social groups
cultural traditionalism
Please read the following article which was written by a high school student about the
media’s portrayal of the Coronavirus and Asian Americans. The article offers a glimpse at
how aspects of ethnocentrism can be used to help create and maintain negative views of
groups of people.
