Subject: ` Request for Approval of Final Report Topic

In my final report, a proposal, I will discuss the problem of prescription drug abuse in California. Specifically, I will discuss opioid abuse – drugs like hydrocodone and oxycodone – and I will narrow my focus to teenage users in Los Angeles County.

I am intending for my audience to be the parents of the teenagers, as research shows this problem is often beginning in the home. Hopefully, my proposal will give parents some deeper education on the subject as well as preventative measures to avoid their child becoming addicted to prescription drugs.

The information I will give my audience includes much more than just statistics. It will include signs to watch for in their child that might indicate the child is at risk, ways to educate their child on the dangers of prescription drugs, preventative strategies such as lock-boxes, more frequent interactions with the child, and more as I delve deeper into my research. I will probably not go into too much detail about how parents should handle a child that is already addicted based upon the immense differences in approach and treatment for those cases. Instead, I want to explore the causes of this issue in depth, and from those, determine preventative techniques that might be effective. I want to answer questions involving where the drugs are obtained, why a child is drawn to the drug, and if the parents are more of source of the problem than they think.

I anticipate little difficulty in finding research for this topic, as much is being written on this epidemic in the United States. The problem is on the rise, and strategies are overdue to curb the tide. I feel confident that I will have enough research with which to create my proposal.

I feel this is an extremely important topic that deserves much more attention and I would like your approval to go forward with it. Thank you for your time and consideration and please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.
