Business Management Discussion Questions

Comm 104Activity 10
1- Based on your topic, write a one-sentence thesis statement about the position you will argue in
your final paper. Make sure it corresponds with one of the three provided topics.
Fall into this deadly trap which is the Physician-Assisted Suicide because of the physical
pressure placed by some hospitals and doctors on the patient or the family to avoid their
financial expenses or health insurance.
2- For EACH of the three types of evidence we discussed in class (examples, statistics, and
testimonials), find one source that fits that type of evidence (e.g., for statistics, X% of people are
influenced by this or Y program costs x amount of dollars; for examples, describe a story or
theoretical piece that illustrates a viewpoint; for testimonial, find an interview or the actual
words/opinion of a stakeholder). Academic articles, books, and primary documents are all great
sources. Newspapers and editorials can also be used, but be selective. Each source must be
relevant to your position on your final paper topic.

● Testimonials ( This is about one of theoncologist who support the arguments)
“There are several factors, including greater national awareness of this issue and the fact that
there are several other states now with this legislation in place. Also, some of the medical
societies that formerly opposed the law, such as the American Medical Association, have
softened their stance and agreed to study whether they should be neutral on physician-assisted
death.”
3- Provide detail about each of the three sources you find. You can (and are encouraged) to use
quotes from your articles/books (provided you cite the page number), but you are required to
interpret this quote in your own words. Additionally, indicate how this type of evidence will be
useful in supporting your argument.

4- Provide a citation for each of the three sources using APA 6th edition format.

(A)”Ethan Remmel was only 41 when he died on June 13, 2011, barely a year after being
diagnosed with terminal colon cancer that quickly spread to his bone. The Bellingham,
Wash., psychology professor and father of two young sons took a lethal dose of crushed
prescription sedatives, becoming one of 255 terminally ill people to exercise that option
so far under the state’s 2009 Death with Dignity Act.“One of the things that Ethan kept
saying is he didn’t want to deteriorate to the point where he couldn’t interact with his
kids,” recalls his partner, Grace Wang, 44. Now, nearly two years later, the hospital
program that aided Remmel is offering an inside look at what it means when a medical
center devoted to curing cancer also decides to help people die.”
Ethan Remmel one of the people who got one of the rare diseases which is the terminal
colon cancer that spread to his bone. The reason that leads him to took a lethal dose of
crushed prescription sedatives was that he did not want to forget how to deal or interact
with his children. The hospital started to think about assisting people to die under many
rules.
(B)
This evidence will be useful to my arguments that some hospitals help the patients to die.
Also, it is a real story.
(A)”Public support for euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide in the United States has
plateaued since the 1990s (range, 47%-69%). In Western Europe, an increasing and
strong public support for euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide has been reported; in
Central and Eastern Europe, support is decreasing. In the United States, less than 20% of
physicians report having received requests for euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide,
and 5% or less have complied. In Oregon and Washington state, less than 1% of licensed
physicians write prescriptions for physician-assisted suicide per year. In the Netherlands
and Belgium, about half or more of physicians reported ever having received a request;
60% of Dutch physicians have ever granted such requests. Between 0.3% to 4.6% of all
deaths are reported as euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide in jurisdictions where they
are legal. ”
There are many patients who ask doctors to help to die, and there are few numbers of
doctors who agree with their patients’ request. (B)
This evidence will support my arguments in showing a brief data about the countries who
physician-assisted suicide in jurisdictions where they legal or illegal.
(A)“There certainly is worry that a family member might push the medication on a
patient because of financial concerns, but that scenario is harder to measure. Rarely, you
do get a sense that there may be some outside pressure on patients to take the medication”
(Emphasis added). “Instead, Dr. Blanke says that in his experience, it usually is the
patient who wants the lethal overdose and the family members who oppose it. Ironically,
assisted suicide laws do not require even notification of family members-at least until
after death.”
According to the oncologist Charles D. Blanke, most of the time families will refuse even
though the patient was who want the Physician-Assisted Suicide such as in taking a lethal
overdose. Also, having the knowledge that the Physician-Assisted Suicide can assist the
patient to end their suffering.
(B)
This evidence will be useful to my arguments due to the fact that he believed that the
Physician-Assisted Suicide is a right for anyone.
Activity 11: Annotated Bibliography
Instructions: This assignment requires you to work more on finding, evaluating, and planning
how to use sources for your final paper.
(1) To complete this assignment, you will need to find at least 6 different sources that you
plan to use in your final paper. Academic articles, books, and primary documents are all
great sources. Newspapers and editorials can also be used, but be selective. Remember,
you should already have three sources from completing Activity 10 – use these again for
this activity if you are sticking with the same topic.
If you did NOT complete Activity 10, make sure to pick a topic from the list provided on
the Written Persuasive Appeal Instructions document in the Final Paper folder on
eCampus.
(2) Provide a reference for each of your 6 sources in proper APA format. Visit the APA
guide at http://libguides.wvu.edu/apa for clarification on APA style.
(3) After each reference, you should provide a paragraph about the source that includes the
following information:
▪ A brief 1-2 sentence summary of the source’s purpose
▪ How you will use the source in your final paper to support your argument
▪ Whether the information from that source supports or contradicts other
information you have found on the topic
