please respond to the following discussion post as a peer making a comment. Bioethics is a new term, and I had to research it. Penn State University reports that bioethics is “a field within applied ethics that focuses on ethical issues that relate to biology and biological systems. Bioethics generally includes medical ethics, animal ethicsand environmental ethicsand how these overlap” (Penn State University, n.d.). When it comes to ethics, the moral principle you hold yourself to is essential. My research found that ethics and bioethics have similarities and differences.

Bioethics is a subcategory under ethics. This has to do with anything related to biology and biological systems. Under bioethics, there are three branches: medical ethics, animal ethics, and environmental ethics.

When it comes to ethics, the central concept is right from wrong. It has three branches: metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics. Sometimes, a bioethics violation could be crossed in research, but the ethics portion is not. Under ethics, ethical theories are used in making ethical decisions. These theories include but are not limited to deontology, utilitarianism, principlism, and virtual ethics. “When healthcare professionals are collaborating on an issue that has ethical implications, it is helpful to have a working knowledge of the various ethical theories, or philosophies, to better understand the perspective of individual team members” (Slusser et al., 2019). Sometimes, a bioethics violation could be crossed in research, but the ethics portion is not.

Bioethics example: Euthanasia has been talked about more often. According to BBC, “Euthanasia is the termination of a very sick person’s life in order to relieve them of their suffering. A person who undergoes euthanasia usually has an incurable condition.” (Concordia University St. Paul, n.d.). Many believe this means ending someone’s suffering, while others think the opposite. Euthanasia is not legal in all parts of the world.

Ethical example: Sharing a patient’s personal information with a loved one who does not have consent. HIPPA was implemented to ensure that patient’s rights are not violated.
