Case Study Analysis Methodology
Students are expected to prepare all cases using the steps outlined below. The case will be
provided or may be selected by the student.
1. Define the problem/issue – ask yourself what is the underlying problematic
circumstance/situation in the case information? Do not identify symptoms of the
underlying core problem/issue. This process of underlying problem identification is
facilitated by listing all the problems/issues you believe exist in the case, then, attempting
to detect if there is a “thread” throughout what you have identified. With such a thread,
addressing the underlying problem/issue unifies the multiple problems and can generally
positively impact them.
Typically, that statement of problem/issue is a more broadly stated matter than any
singular, previously identified problem. The problem must be stated in the form of a
question that asks one to solve. For example, “How can we increase awareness of organ
donation and get more people to be organ donors … ? Why are the factors contributing to
increasing nurse burnout rates?
2. Gather pertinent facts – list the facts that relate only to the problem statement.
a. Include a brief background on the institution
b. How long has the problem existed?
c. Define the stakeholders
i. implications to each
ii. financial impact to each
iii. non-financial impacts
3. Develop/propose alternative solutions – list all the ways that the problem could be
dealt with in order to bring about a solution. Important: list all alternatives that are
possible, whether you agree with them or not.
4. Analyze and evaluate pros and cons of each alternative solution – list the advantages
and disadvantages you predict could result from each possible alternative as the solution
to the problem (decision). Include quantitative data if applicable.
5. Make a decision and justify your choice – make a statement of your decision (one of
the previously stated alternative solutions), i.e., the alternative solution that emerges,
based upon your analysis, as the best. This is your decision. State your reasons for
choosing this alternative solution for implementation as your decision. The best way to
defend your decision is to state why it is the best alternative from those identified and
secondarily, explain why the other alternative solutions were not as robust.
