Discovering Hypertension through Electronic Health Records
Due to the increasing cases of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the United States of
America, the American Medical Association has made the decision to launch a new healthcare
initiative that targets strengthening the links between the clinic and the community. It is the
expectation of the American Medical Association to collaborate with physicians across the
country in order to reduce incidences of these two diseases and improve results for those who are
already living with them. Key factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease are high blood
pressure and prediabetes. The goal for improving these conditions initially begins with
improving outcomes for the 30 million people with hypertension who are receiving medical care
but do not have their high blood pressure under control (Lazarus, 2013). The article by Lazarus
(2013) discusses the initiative and study related to improving health outcomes for society.
Electronic Health Records and Hypertension Study
There are computer based algorithms that can identify patients who have not yet been
diagnosed with hypertension if they are applied to an electronic health record. There are three
basic algorithms that include parameters around a patient’s most recent blood pressure or
average blood pressure measurements that will point out those at risk for hypertension (Amaassn.org, 2014). After one hundred physicians in twenty three primary care systems used these
algorithms, one thousand four hundred and thirty two patients were targeted as at risk for
hypertension (AMA-assn.org, 2014).
Once the patients were identified, they were sent letter informing them of the process
and their possible condition and also requesting that a visit to the office be scheduled in order to
be evaluated. After one week, phone calls were made to question those at risk and schedule an
appointment. If the patient agreed to the appointment and showed up, their blood pressure was
3
taken with an automated blood pressure tool. The device is meant to take six measurements with
no health care provider present, each a minute apart, discard the first measurement and average
the remaining five measurements (AMA-assn.org, 2014). If the patient never set up a follow up
appointment after receiving the letter and a phone call, a notification that they are at risk for
hypertension was set to pop up on the screen at their next visit.
After putting this study into place, more than seventy percent of the patients that were
identified received a diagnosis for hypertension. This improved the accuracy of hypertension
diagnosis by seventy two percent in a thirty month period. The American Medical Association,
who is collaborating with researchers at Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety
and Quality at the Johns Hopkins Center to Eliminate Cardiovascular Health Disparities, plans to
take what is learned about improving control of high blood pressure to spread effective models
and methods to more practice communities (AMA-assn.org, 2014).
Conclusion
The American Medical Association is concerned about the sizeable amount of
cardiovascular disease and diabetes cases that are sweeping the nation. It is their goal to
minimize the death toll that results from these two illnesses. One way to monitor these cases are
through the electronic health records that are provided by physicians. That is why the American
Medical Association needs the help of volunteer physicians in order to find those with a
condition that fits the profile given. The goal of the American Medical Association is to target
those at risk for hypertension, or high blood pressure. They do this because high blood pressure
is a key factor in cardiovascular disease. By doing so, they are essentially preventing the heart
condition by warning the patient to monitor their situation so that they will not become
susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

Cautions
Magazines, newspapers, blogs, wikis, and websites are not the same
thing as a journal.
Verify your source is a journal. There are websites and magazines that
use the same names as some of the journals on the list. Make sure you
are using the actual academic, peer reviewed journal.

Papers not utilizing an academic, peer reviewed journal will receive an
