could be about a person, dead or alive, or about a concept (The American Dream), or
about an object, or really about anything. You are simply giving us the facts. You

understanding grows.
This speech is also going to be recorded. You are going to invite 3-5 audience
members to watch you give your speech. They won’t say anything. They will listen.
Here is a breakdown of how I will evaluate your speech:
INTRODUCTION
Starts with an attention getter or hook right at the beginning. If in doubt, ask an
insightful question that relates to your topic. That’s also a hook.
Relate topic to audience by saying how relevant it is for them to know something
about this topic.
Tell us what your speech is about (your purpose). One sentence.
Tell us your main points (preview).
Tell us why you know something about this topic (credibility). Are you an expert?
Have you researched the topic?
BODY
You should have 3-4 main points for the body of the speech.
Each main point should be supplemented with information that is easy to understand.
CONCLUSION
Give a signal phrase such as “In conclusion…” or “In closing…” or “As I bring this
to an end…” and a clear summary of each main point.
ACADEMIC SOURCES
You are required to use 3-5 academic sources which include scholarly/peer reviewed
articles, books, encyclopedias. You are allowed to use .gov, .edu, or .org sites
but only after you met the academic source requirement.
