speech: the self letter and culture

1.

PART 1 – EXPLORING SELF AND CULTURE

How have your perspectives on diversity been shaped by your personal journey? To recognize your own individual differences, consider, for example, the diversity within your family. How different are you from your siblings? How different are you from your parents? How different is your family in comparison to your relatives? Think Values, world views, etc. Exploring these kinds of questions is an initial step in the ongoing effort to develop cultural awareness. To receive full credit, you must use concepts from the lecture – and explore those deeper “below the surface iceberg items.”

PART 2 – THE MUSLIM ON THE AIRPLANE

Watching the news, it seems like ethnic divides are ever-deepening. But how can we solve these complicated problems when each side lives in fear of the other? The answer is simple, argues Syrian-American poet Amal Kassir – it starts with, “What’s your name?”

After watching the Ted Talk “The Muslim on the airplane,”

discuss the importance of challenging our own viewpoints, especially our stereotypes and prejudices. What was something you found impactful while watching this TedTalk?

You may choose to examine and discuss how you’ve been stereotyped or judged based on your own differences. You may also choose to examine and discuss your own stereotypes/prejudices. Where did they come from? Why do you hold those beliefs? Etc.. This reflection prompt will also help guide your discussion in this week’s Color Blind Discussion Post.

** Reflections should focus on your own experiences, and how the knowledge learned can be applied to better improve your personal and professional communication skills. Reflections should be a minimum of 1.5 pages – using Times New Roman, 12-point font, one-inch margins, single-spaced. It should include a heading with your name, course number, paper title, and professor’s name. You do not need to use MLA or citations. Think of reflection assignments as a focused journal entry – NOT an essay or research paper. Review the example posted under FAQs for an example

Reflection Assignment: Dear Me – A Letter to My Younger Self

As a way to celebrate International Women’s Day, YouTube encouraged people to empower young women with the #DearMe campaign. The #DearMe campaign asks digital creators around the world to upload “video letters” to their younger selves that provide the advice and encouragement that they wish they had heard when they were younger. Although the initial focus was on young girls, these video letters apply to anyone wishing to tell their younger selves or others a supportive, clarifying, and/or realistic message. A quick search of the videos yields an array of messages, perspectives, and identities. In this section, you have been learning about how your self-perceptions and others’ perceptions of you have, in part, formed who you are.

Part 1 – Write a letter to your younger self. What advice would you give your younger self? What part does perception play in your message to your younger self?

Part 2 – Write a letter to your future self. Set goals for yourself, make a prediction about the world. Envision the future, and then go to

www.futureme.org

and copy/paste the letter. Set a date in the future for the letter to be sent to you.

Submit to the assignment Dropbox for “Letter to Myself” prior to the deadline.
