2) Critically evaluate the technologies Global Systems for Mobile (GSM), General Packet Radio
Service (GPRS), Short Message Service (SMS) and Ad hoc Network Technology
3) Evaluate device components and associated technology specific to pervasive computing
environment
Assignment Objective
This assignment aims to prepare the students to be able to understand the comprehensive and innovative
knowledge of ad hoc and broadband wireless engineering. It will include WAP, Wireless LAN security and
broadband wireless networks, technologies GSM, GPRS, SMS and Ad hoc Network Technology and
pervasive computing environment
Assignment Tasks
Task 1: Design of Wireless Network in ABC College
(60 Marks)
ABC is a new college located in Muscat. It is a center for undergraduate and postgraduate
teaching. The college does not have wireless network inside the campus. However, the campus

has an Ethernet segment that provides LAN connection among the labs and buildings across the
campus. The college building infrastructure is divided into 2 buildings as Teaching-Learning and
Admin blocks.
The Teaching-Learning block has 2 floors: ground, and first floor. There are 12 classrooms and 2
labs in each floor of Teaching-Learning block. Each classroom can accommodate 50 students who
will be using laptops. Each lab contains 50 PCs, 1 server and 1 printer. They are networked within
the lab but with no internet connectivity. Server in each lab is connected to the main server which
is located in the admin block.
The admin block consists of 2 floors. The ground floor has the office rooms, Library, Visitors
lounge, general lab, server room and auditorium with necessary consumer electronics and highspeed internet access. The office rooms consist of 5 workstations, and it should be facilitated
with wireless connectivity. Library should be with wireless connectivity. The general lab is
equipped with 300 PCs and 2 servers for browsing and general access for the students. All the
PCs in the general lab should also be connected through wireless. The refectory, Indoor sports
arena and amenities center are in first floor, and they should be under wireless connection. The
detailed sizes of each room are given in the layout design.
As a wireless network consultant, you have been assigned the task to design the wireless network
in the hotel with following requirements:

➢ Internet access must be provided to all the staff, students and the visitors,
➢ All the students and staff should be able to connect their laptops and mobile devices to
the wireless network anywhere within the campus.

c. Exhibit a diagram showing the wireless network for ABC College.
d. Discuss the security threats and how you will protect the Wi-Fi network inside the hotel.
e. Implement and configure wireless network for ABC College and demonstrate this scenario
in MEC lab or by using packet tracer.

Task 2:
(40 Marks)
Select published paper reference (preferably from the ACM DL or IEEE CSDL) that discusses the
comparative review of:
a) Pervasive computing in health sector
b) GSM network
The student is expected to provide the critical evaluation of the selected research papers. The
paper you select MUST NOT BE DISCUSSED WITH ANOTHER STUDENT. Students need to select a
research paper which should be published after 2017.
NOTE: Task 1 needs to be done in packet tracer. Appropriate screenshots and explanation should be
included in the assignment write-up. The packet tracer file should be submitted in MEC Learn on the day
of assignment submission itself. Any assignment without packet tracer file will not be evaluated. Total
1500 words expected in overall assignment. Students can use any version of packet tracer however latest
version is recommended.
