Methodology-Safety aluminum adjuvants
Context: Although vaccines containing aluminum adjuvants have been used safely for almost a century,
sporadic publications over the years have suggested that aluminum adjuvants may be linked to various
serious health risks. For this reason, the NACI secretariat at the Public Health Agency of Canada, is
currently carrying out a systematic review (SR) to assess the quantity and quality of available data on the
safety of aluminum adjuvants. Preliminary results suggest that the available evidence is limited. The
majority of reports do not provide strong evidence of an association between aluminum adjuvants and
human health risks. The project assigned to me is to contribute to the promotion of the knowledge
generated (knowledge transfer) resulting from the SR carried out.
Depending on the nature of the project, the literature synthesis serves to take account of current
knowledge and practices, particularly with regard to the description or understanding of the public
health problem, in this case, the safety of aluminum adjuvants included in vaccines. The synthesis of the
literature is then used to justify why we think the project we’re working on is interesting and relevant
contribution to the problem we’ve outlined.
Objective: Synthesising the findings and justifying the methodology used in the context of knowledge
transfer.
Select texts that are relevant to the project and justify the methodology chosen to carry out the project.
This involves reviewing the studies that have been carried out on aluminum adjuvants safety, such as
recent systematic reviews.

A brief description of the literature search process should be provided, to show the logic used to
identify and select the works selected. (qualitative research and triangulation)
Since there is no hypothesis to be tested, the research method is purely qualitative. Identify and
use a framework of this methodology to present your results.
The synthesis must be based on at least ten relevant references, including mainly scientific
articles, but may also include grey literature (I have linked some examples below).
Introduce briefly the concepts by writing a simple paragraph for each section, specifically on the
results you found. For example, you found multiple sources that approve of the safety of
aluminum adjuvants in vaccines.
Structure your ideas: There’s no particular order in how you present the information as long as it
is justified. In this case, you can talk about inclusion and exclusion criteria, the number of
references found, what are the conclusions, etc.
Visual Aids and Infographics: You can incorporate visual aids like infographics, charts, or diagrams
to simplify complex information and enhance understanding.
Ensure the data comes from reputable sources such as scientific journals, health organizations,
and government websites.
The document should be between 3-5 pages long, without the references.
Here are the steps to develop such a methodology
1. Quick Research on Understanding of Aluminum Adjuvants in Vaccines
Gather comprehensive information about:
– Aluminum adjuvants (description) and how they work
– The safety profile of aluminum adjuvants
2. Quick Research on Vaccine Hesitancy
Gather comprehensive information about:
– Relationship between vaccine hesitancy and aluminum adjuvants
– Mechanisms of vaccine hesitancy
3. Qualitative research methodology
– Explain what framework you used, it can be a pre-existing one. (questions you
asked yourself while researching, how you structured the information, etc.)
– Triangulation
4. Justification
The main goal is to explain the methodology used, how you selected the references and why you
selected these references.
You need to justify why you think that the project is an interesting and relevant contribution to
the problem you have set out, by reviewing the studies that have been carried out. This is why
you gather information on its description and understanding, and, where applicable on existing
alternative interventions or programs.
Here is a brief explanation on why the project is interesting:
From a public health perspective, discussing the safety of aluminum adjuvants in vaccines is crucial for
several reasons:
1. Vaccine Confidence and Acceptance: Addressing concerns about vaccine ingredients, such as
aluminum adjuvants, helps maintain public trust in vaccination programs. Some individuals may
have hesitancy or refuse vaccines due to safety concerns, and providing transparent information
about adjuvants can help alleviate these worries.
2. Risk-Benefit Assessment: Understanding the safety profile of aluminum adjuvants allows public
health officials and healthcare providers to conduct informed risk-benefit assessments. While
adjuvants enhance vaccine effectiveness, it’s crucial to balance their benefits against any
potential risks to ensure the overall safety of immunization.
3. Addressing Misinformation: Misinformation or misconceptions about vaccine ingredients,
including aluminum adjuvants, can circulate widely and influence public perception. By providing
accurate information based on scientific evidence, health authorities can counter misinformation
and promote informed decision-making.
4. Monitoring Adverse Events: Research on the safety of aluminum adjuvants helps in monitoring
and evaluating adverse events following vaccination. While adverse events related to adjuvants
are rare, thorough investigation and understanding contribute to improving vaccine safety
monitoring systems.
5. Public Health Communication: Open and clear communication about the safety of vaccine
components is essential to educate the public and healthcare professionals. It empowers
individuals to make informed choices and fosters trust in vaccination programs.
6. Continued Research and Innovation: Research on adjuvants, their safety, and potential
alternatives is crucial for advancing vaccine technology. It helps in developing safer and more
effective vaccines while maintaining high safety standards.
