Observing Apple’s Inner Workings Through a Semester Journal
Apple Inc. is a very large technology company. It is known for making revolutionary
products like the iPhone, iPad, and Mac computers. These products have completely changed the
technology world. I have interned at Apple for a few months. I have seen how the company
works from the inside. I have observed the secret way new products are made. I have also seen
how Apple prepares to announce new products. Working inside this famous company has let me
learn a lot about it. I gained unique insights into Apple’s creative culture. I have also seen their
intense focus on perfect design. Moreover, I have experienced the secrecy they have around new
product launches. From attending product development meetings to experiencing the secrecy
around launches firsthand, I have gained an insider perspective into Apple’s relentless
innovation, meticulous attention to design principles, and intense company culture. Working at
Apple has provided unique access to a fast-paced, intensely competitive, and profoundly
impactful organization.
Evidence of Innovation
Apple is known for designing innovative, revolutionary products. These products change
how people use technology and interact with it. A great example of this is the first iPhone in
2007. The iPhone completely shook up the smartphone industry. It did this through its new multitouch screen. This was the first phone screen you could control with your fingers instead of a
stylus. The iPhone also had a very simple interface. This interface made the powerful computer
in the phone easy to use. The iPhone set the standard for all future smartphones. After the
iPhone, touch screens and simple interfaces became normal features that customers expected. So,
the first iPhone in 2007 really transformed what a mobile phone could do. By putting powerful
computing in a sleek, portable device with finger-based controls, the iPhone set a new paradigm
for mobile phones. It established Apple as a leader in the smartphone market, spurring
advancements like app stores and mobile internet browsing that are now standard industry-wide.
The iPhone exemplifies Apple’s ability to radically shake up industries with disruptive
innovations.
Within Apple, product designers and engineers are constantly encouraged to think outside
the box. In weekly department meetings, we brainstorm and debate new ideas for improving
existing products as well as imagining completely new categories of devices. There is an
atmosphere of creativity, with ample resources dedicated to research and development. The work
is fast-paced but exciting, as we have the opportunity to turn our ideas into revolutionary
products.
Attention to Design Principles
Apple puts great emphasis on design principles like simplicity, usability, and elegance.
The company has an entire group called the Human Interface Team dedicated to user experience.
I have learned to ensure everything from the placement of buttons to the interface animations
adheres to Apple’s strict design standards. Details that seem small, like the tactile feedback when
you press an iPhone button, are analyzed to make products satisfying to interact with.
Culture of Secrecy
Apple has a reputation for secrecy, carefully guarding details about product launches and
preventing leaks. As an intern, I have experienced this firsthand. We code-name unreleased
products and limit access to sensitive information. New employees sign extensive non-disclosure
agreements. Security policies restrict our ability to discuss work outside the office. While this
level of secrecy can seem excessive, it has benefits. It builds anticipation for major product

announcements and prevents competitors from getting advance notice and copying features. As
an Apple employee, I have embraced secrecy as an important part of our company’s identity.
These observations provide an insider perspective into Apple’s relentless innovation,
design principles, and culture of secrecy. By examining the company so closely, I have gained an
appreciation for how Apple delivers exceptional products that advance industries and define new
product categories. The opportunity to participate directly in this process as an Apple employee
has been a transformative learning experience in my career.
