Mass media communication truly has superpowers. While we are profoundly aware of its role
in the advancement of literacy, education, and prosperity, we know there are dangers to
spending too much time consuming it. There are many ethical dilemmas and decisions to
consider as we navigate the endless amount of content vying for our attention.
In today’s hyper-partisan world, knowing what is “spun” and who is doing the “spinning” can be
difficult. Additionally, it is not always easy to recognize propaganda, which is information used
to promote a particular political cause or point of view.
Review the scenarios below and explain whether any of the messages described can be
considered propaganda. Support your response with rationale and examples. Respond to the
following in a minimum of 175 words:

A message from a partisan media outlet that is not paid for with government funds
A message that is 100 percent true and paid for with government funds and promoted
with government directions that is helpful to a particular party and damaging to
another
Ordinary citizen social media posts that are liked and shared and believed to be true
and important
Explain whether you feel it is possible to stop the spread of damaging propaganda. If so,
how do you feel this can be accomplished?
