We have seen how mass media impacts us as individuals and in our communities, how having
shared media experiences can have the effect of pulling communities together, while
fragmentation in media (personalized media content filtered to us through our own social
accounts) can create the reality of all of us feeling disconnected from those around us.
In the 2020 elections (Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden), we saw how the media we choose to
consume changes our perception of important issues and conflicts. Some major media outlets
propagated one idea while other equally large outlets said the opposite. More importantly, we
learned that our media consumption can all too easily be exploited by algorithms that lead us
into echo chambers of our own making. It is more important than ever to navigate the media
consciously and deliberately.

Explain our responsibility as educated citizens to improve our own personal media
literacy. Why is this important?
Some argue that AI, with its emotionless, unbiased nature, should play a bigger role in
fact-checking media. What are the potential positive or negative consequences of doing
this?
Explain how we can improve the quality of our media consumption to gain a broader
perspective on important issues.
