SWOT analysis for AdventHealth Hinsdale

SWOT which is an acronym for strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat is aimed at
setting realistic, profitable and achievable goals for an organization (Tilley, 2020). It is also used
to assess how the organization is doing compared to their competitors. It considers both internal
and external factors of the organization which some will be within the control of the organization
or not. (Teoli et al, 2022). SWOT analysis if used well can bring new insights on the
current business dealings and help develop the right insights for any situation. Strength
and weakness are internal factors that support and obstruct an organization from
achieving their mission statement or goals. External factors comprise of opportunities
and threats that helps organization to achieve the statement goals or not, which the
company has less control of (Phadermrod et al., 2019). SWOT helps to select
opportunities for improvement and prioritize action plans.
A health care organization I will be doing SWOT analysis is Adventhealth Hinsdale Medical
Center (AHMC). AHMC mission is continuing the healing of Jesus Christ, therefore the goal is to
provide patient and family with environment that promote healing. Some of the strengths of
AHMC is having knowledgeable leaders and staff members. Strength involves something the
organization is doing well as well as their competitor (Phadermrod et al, 2019). They are factors
the organization should maintain to prevent turning it into a threat. Most of the leadership
of Hinsdale hospital have been with the organization and have risen through the
ranks. They know the various changes that the organization has gone through over the years
and make sure the core values of the organization is not lost as it affiliates with other
organizations such as Ascension and Alexian Brothers and most recently University of Chicago
Medicine. Long term employees including nurses and physicians who are knowledgeable about
the organizations systems, applications, ministries, and customers provide and deliver
consistent great quality care. Having worked with other health care organizations in different
neighborhoods, the patient population in and around the hospital have a high expectation of the
care they receive from staff. Many of them as donors to the hospitals expect quality care worth
their contributions. Having a new graduate university where new employees with minimal to no
experience are nurtured and trained to develop nursing skills and customer service skills to
boost our practices.
AHMC is rated high by patients/customers for the quality of care and personable customer
service, however it has some weaknesses that need attention. There is a high turnover of
staff that has become challenging in filling those positions. The goal and pressure to live provide
a magnet quality care to customers stresses staff out that cause most of them to leave the
organization within a short time. Inability of leadership to fill the vacancies, working
with less staff with the same expectation becomes a dauting task for staff who eventually leave
dwindling the staff numbers even more. Another weakness is the call waiting times within
the hospital. The expectation is to respond to a patient call within two minutes but due to limited
staff that goal is not met, which affects customer satisfaction.
Organization’s opportunity is their strength but a weakness for the competitor.
This must be maintained to stay in the industry and have a competitive edge. An
opportunity for the company to augment the staff members to increase their scores it to
provide competitive rates that will entice health care professionals to consider working
for the company. Adequate staff will be able to respond in time to patients’ needs and
that in its sense will promote the environment to promote healing. Support from the
executive/leadership during staffing crisis will go a long way to boosting staff
confidence.
Threats are competitors strength thus areas that are doing better than AHMC.
Many nurses left for the Edward-Elmhurst hospital due to better hourly pay and staffing.
Some threats to the organization are the uncertainty of staff retention coupled with high
unrealistic customer expectations and demands. There is the tendency of
losing knowledgeable long-time employees due to high work volumes. Covid has
already changed the dynamics of staffing and a lot of health professionals are moving
to a third-party health care staffing agency.

SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. A SWOT analysis is a tool that can
be used to develop realistic and desirable business outcomes. It is a tool that can be applied in several
ways for small projects to set organizational missions and strategic plans (Tilley, Scott & Rosenblatt
2019). SWOT can help ensure an organization’s strengths are used to their full advantage, weaknesses
are minimized or eliminated, opportunities are taken advantage of, and risks are identified and managed.
SWOT can also help provide valuable information for the business case, or reasons and justification, for
new proposals and projects.
BetterHelp is a telehealth provider that makes access to mental health professionals convenient and
affordable (BetterHelp, n.d.). BetterHelp is one of a growing number of companies offering online mental
health services in the U.S.
Strengths may include providing a HIPAA-compliant online platform that makes access to and payment
for mental health services easy and convenient, scalable and flexible staffing/pricing to better match
supply and demand for services.
Weaknesses for BetterHelp include licensing restrictions that limit where healthcare professionals may
provide care and which insurers and payers cover their services. Weaknesses also include patients’
digital health technology literacy and network issues that can reduce connectivity or patient privacy
(Heath, 2022).
Many of these weaknesses can also be viewed as threats (e.g. regulatory and payer challenges, privacy).
Many large healthcare providers and other organizations are also entering the online mental health space
and will compete for business. Healthcare organizations may leverage existing contracts with payers,
trust within their service area, and employee network.
Finally, there are several opportunities for organizations like BetterHelp. BetterHelp can take advantage
of greater access and reimbursement for telehealth created in response to the COVID-19 public health
emergency. BetterHelp can leverage its telehealth platform or integrate with others to diversify its services
to other health conditions and related services (e.g. pharmacy services, fitness and wellness). Betterhelp
can also increase partnerships with insurers, payers, healthcare providers and provider networks as an
affordable, efficient benefit.
Strategic planning drives the short and long-term strategy of an organization. SWOT analysis can help
ensure these critical decisions are well-informed, and the requests that are created the influence day-today operations can be well supported.
