Essay # 3 – Constructing the
“Conversation” and Making an Argument
This semester you have read numerous texts that in
some way address the subject of happiness. These
texts together, along with many others, form a
“conversation” that is being had on this issue in real
time—a collection of voices and viewpoints that are
contributing from various corners to mete out the
truth, educate or sway public opinion.
In this final essay for the course, you will be narrowing down a research question you’d like to
pursue within the umbrella topic of happiness, select and integrate sources that form a
“conversation” around your research question and then enter that conversation yourself by
contributing your own researched argument.
Part 1. Introduction
● Introduces and narrows the topic and makes a case for its significance.
● Describe the question or problem the paper will investigate.
● Include a thesis that implies the direction your analysis will take and clarifies your
argument.
Part 2. The Body, in which you analyze the texts, constructing “the conversation”
● Explain at least three different viewpoints on your topic. Make sure you present the
positions in a way that clearly distinguishes them.
● Use at least three texts to represent these viewpoints and illustrate the arguments they
articulate. Show how each individual text is representative of a different viewpoint on the
issue or different aspect of the problem. You may draw from the texts we’ve read/viewed
in class for this.
● Describe the overall argument each text makes, and some of the main points of
connection, contrast, agreement, similarity and difference (situating each text in relation
to the others and evaluating relevant strengths/limitations of the positions).
Part 3: Your argument, in which you “enter the conversation”
● Now that you’ve laid the groundwork by situating the texts in conversation, carve out and
support your own position using your own research and elements of effective
argumentation we’ve studied this term.
Part 4: Conclusion
● Answer the “So What?” question, establishing the relevance of the issue for society
and/or the individual reader today.
