FIRST SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT – PROJECT (Spring Semester 2024)
WEIGHT IN COURSE GRADE AS RECORDED IN THE SYLLABUS: 50%
Course Overview:
Corporate finance is a modern, integrative financial strategy course that focuses on
organizational structure and financing decisions for large projects. Using the lens of
corporate finance, we get a thorough view of how organizations use corporate finance
techniques, concentrated in equity ownership and financial structure, and how corporate
finance affects a firm’s value and performance. The aim is to raise understanding of
how corporate finance as a discipline creates value for the firm through investment and
financing decisions.
Course Learning Outcomes:
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role and purpose of finance in
corporations,
• Discuss various financial practices regarding capital structure and dividend policy,
• Analyze short and long-term corporate financing decisions,
• Perform securities valuation,
• Discuss the added value and limitations associated with different financial strategies
applied by corporations.
Assignment Overview:
This assignment is an important piece of coursework, representing 50% of the overall mark
for the module; and as such, it should be given the appropriate commitment of time and
effort. Quality will be a priority when this assignment is marked; and therefore, I will expect
to see the following:
• Evidence of extensive reading: Poorly researched essays are obvious, tending to involve
a lot of waffling based on one or two texts or academic papers. You are
expected to identify and examine a significant number of academic papers and scholarly
articles for this assignment. Submissions that do not meet this standard will not earn a
strong mark.
• Evidence of critical thinking and analysis: It is insufficient to simply summarize your
arguments. You must analyze the material and use your examination to structure a
response to the questions in the case. This will illustrate your critical engagement with
and mastery of the material.
• Quality writing and referencing: You may ask why this is important in the assessment,
since the purpose of this assignment is to explore your understanding of the course
content and not to test your writing skills. However, this is not entirely true. The ability
to communicate your methodology and findings in a way that builds confidence in you
as a professional and in the quality of your recommendations is critical to successful
practice in corporate finance.
