Background: Chapters 4-6 discuss strategies for developing strong business messages and effective communication methods using audience analysis, purpose evaluation, and the ‘You’ Attitude. Every day, companies and professionals use these strategies to communicate with various audiences and develop and reinforce messages and images about their organizations.
This assignment explores how effective some companies are in conveying specific messages about their businesses and whether the messaging is effective and consistent.
Directions: You have been assigned to investigate the business messaging of a specific company listed on Newsweekmagazine’s compilation of America’s Most Responsible Companies. Your goal is to examine the company’s messaging and branding to internal and external audiences to see if they consistently meet the magazine’s criteria of being environmental and socially responsible as corporate citizens in the U.S.
Visit the company’s website and read their mission and/or vision statements to determine their goals and missions, noting keywords and phrases and what they offer consumers (remember: they are selling specific attitudes and feelings about the company in addition to products or affiliation). What themes are associated with the company (i.e., innovation, community, unity, industry leader, etc.)? Next, compare the mission and vision statements to the company’s messaging to external audiences by examining two to three (2-3) advertisements (can be commercials or print ads), at least one online presentation (through YouTube), audience reviews of the company/products, and at least three (3) news and/or journal articles about the business.
Present your findings in a 4- to 6-minute slide presentation (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.) to the class. Include the following details in your presentation (checklist):
An overall description of the company, including when they were founded, their mission statement, their vision statement, whether they are national or international, the product(s) they produce and sell, and the number of employees.
Who is the audience for this company’s messages? (Describe demographic and psychographic characteristics of the audience. Be specific with who fits into the primary, secondary, and tertiary audience levels.)
What is the overall message being conveyed? Cite keywords and phrases from the company’s website to support your answer.
How well do they meet the criteria to be included on Newsweek’s list (see the evaluation criteria/methodology at the bottom of the list here:
