Objectives
The goal of this lab is to begin understanding what your network looks like, how to troubleshoot
using Ping, obtain information locally with IPCONFIG, and utilize ARP and Tracert to explore
LAN information and beyond.
After completing this lab, you will be able to:
• Utilize IPCONFIG
• Explain DHCP
• Show the TCP/IP information about your computer
• Utilize Ping for troubleshooting
• Utilize ARP to view the cache
• Utilize Tracert (trace route) to see hops occurring
• Create a document of your findings that includes images.
Materials Required
This lab will require the following:
• Access to the internet
• Image capture software, such as the “Snipping” tool in Windows (free)

(BE SURE TO CAPTURE IMAGES TO SHOW ME WHAT YOU FIND); just a few. Create a separate
document and do not answer questions on here.)
This assignment will explore the many ways to determine what is on your network. Please

respond to the following questions at minimum:

1. What are the two main commands for IPCONFIG?
a. What are the results and how are they different (I did this in class)?
2. What is DHCP?
3. How can you use DHCP to understand your network?
4. What command shows you TCP/IP information?
a. What are your results?
5. What is the command to see ARP (address resolution protocol) cache?
a. Provide the results of the command.
6. What can the Ping command be used for?
a. Choose an IP address on your network to ping and provide the results.
b. What IP address would you not Ping in your LAN and why?
7. Memorizing an external server IP address is important for troubleshooting.
What would you be testing if you are pinging a service outside of your LAN
with the IP address you have memorized?
a. What is a good service and IP address to memorize?
b. Ping your choice and show the results.
8. Perform and show a Tracert command for your LAN and a outside service.
9. Why would you perform a Tracert command?
