Inverted Pyramid Essay
Take the following information and write a story in Inverted Pyramid style, then with a “You” lead, then with a narrative approach.
The Miami University board of trustees met Friday at the Marcum Conference Center. The trustees voted 7-2 to increase student fees by 10 percent to pay for security improvements. The trustees’ meeting began with routine matters, but two hours into it, student Stephanie Smith asked to be heard. She said a friend of hers had been sexually assaulted on her way home from the library last week. She said there have been nine sexual assaults reported at Miami in the first two months of the fall semester, saying that is a number that is intolerable. Smith, a junior accounting major from Cleveland, said she didn’t intend to get involved in the board of trustees meeting, but when her alarm went off at 7 a.m., “I just had a feeling that I needed to speak out.” She got dressed including putting on a RedHawks sweatshirt, emailed her first-class professor that she would be absent, and headed to the 9 a.m. meeting. The trustees listened intently to her, and at 11:30, and after discussion, they proposed a fee hike be passed on an emergency basis. It will be effective spring semester, but in the meantime, school officials say they will move quickly to increase education and communication about the problem, redirect campus police to increase patrols at night, and ask Oxford police to do the same. “Anything that can be done to make students safer is appreciated,” Smith said after the meeting.
