LC The Construct Emotional Intelligence Question

You will select a single construct, conduct a literature search on that construct to discover eight or more research reports that explore the construct in some way, and construct a “write up” that you will submit to me, but also make available to the entire class.

First, you should have already selected a construct and that construct should have already been approved by me, per the instructions given to you earlier this semester. If you do not have an email from me stating that that your construct selection has been approved, STOP — do not continue — go back and follow the instructions for getting construct approval before going any further.

Your write-up should include:

Page 1

  • A conceptual definition of your construct that includes one or more citations indicating the source(s) of that definition. Your conceptual definition should follow the guidelines discussed in class, and should be explained in clear, plain language. Your conceptual definition can be a direct quotation, or it can be a definition that you assemble from multiple sources. In any case, your conceptual definition must be no longer than one sentence.
  • An operational definition of your construct that includes ONE source citation to the quantitative research instrument your operational definition is referencing. Your operational definition must be no longer than one sentence and should follow the format discussed in class.
  • A list of three to five research questions that you believe would be useful for guiding future research. Your research questions must be open-ended (NOT yes/no questions) and must be phrased following the guidelines for research questions in your textbook and in lecture. Each research question should inquire about the relationship between your construct and one or more other constructs in a specific communication context.

  • Include a properly formatted APA style “References” page that includes the references corresponding to the two (or more) sources that you cite on Page 1, and at least EIGHT additional sources that explore your construct in some way. You should attempt to develop as much variety as possible with these sources — find studies that have explored your construct in as many different contexts as possible and in relationship to as many other constructs as possible.
  • Sources

  • Your sources must be drawn only from research reports (where data are collected and analyzed) published in scholarly journals from the communication studies discipline (this was discussed and demonstrated in previous lectures).
  • I prefer that your conceptual definition come from a communication studies journal, but sometimes you may need to rely on a non-communication source for your definition — this is acceptable, but you should always check with me in advance.
  • Your operational definition may come from a communication studies journal, but also might come from a non-communication studies source — this is common and acceptable. Still, when using non-communication studies sources, it is always best to consult with me beforehand.
  • Otherwise, conference papers, books, webpages, open-access journals, or articles from other disciplines (not on the list of communication journals posted on Brightspace) are not acceptable for this assignment.
  • If you cannot find the sources you need to successfully complete this assignment, you will need to change constructs so you can meet the requirements in these instructions. Therefore, it is your responsibility to verify that you can indeed find the sources you need on your construct early, well before the assignment deadline. I will never accept “I couldn’t find any sources” as an excuse. Make sure you can find the sources you need or go back and go through the process of re-selecting a construct with me, by email, again.

    YOUR SOURCES
 Minimum of Eight Sources on your Construct
 Your sources must be drawn only from research reports (where data are collected
and analyzed) published in scholarly journals from the communication studies
    discipline
 Go for as much variety as possible
 Find your construct studied in as many different contexts and in relationship to as
    many different constructs as possible
 (your conceptual and operational definitions might come from non-communication
sources – check with me if that’s the case)

    THE CONCEPTUAL DEFINITION
 Explains what your construct means
 This is NOT a dictionary definition
 Cites scholarly literature to explain the construct
 Should be a single sentence
     Must be cited
     One or more sources
 Should be clear to a general audience

 This isn’t going to look like any definition with which you
    are familiar
 Cites a method of measuring a construct as a variable
 Measuring – putting a quantitative value on it
 Cites a published research instrument used to
    quantify the construct
 This if often a quantitative survey, but not necessarily

    THE DEFINITIONS — EXAMPLES
     Gender Roles
     Conceptual Definition
 Gender role refers to behaviors, roles, and attitudes
that the specific culture defines as more appropriate
to males or females (International Encyclopedia of the Social &
Behavioral Sciences, 2001), and includes the roles identified as
“masculine,” “feminine,” or “androgynous” (Bem, 1974).

    THE REFERENCES

    A FEW FINAL WORDS
 Submit to Brightspace by or before the deadline
 Waiting until the last minute can bring unpleasant side effects
 Don’t make this a bigger project than it is
 Start early and seek clarification early
 Manage your time so you can take care of yourself, too
