Writing Assignment
Objective: To stimulate critical thinking about the role of the Licensed Vocational Nurse in
identifying community health issues and to describe how nurses can develop, plan, and
implement strategies to address community health issues.
Instructions: Interview a person, age 65 years or older, that is affected by one of the objectives
listed. Share with this person effective nursing interventions/community resources that would
be useful to them and would contribute to achieving objective goal.
1. Preparation
a. Access the Healthy People 2030 website (www.healthypeople.gov)
i. Hover over the arrow near objectives and data
ii. Click Browse Objectives
iii. Under ‘Health Behaviors,’ => click ‘Preventative Care’
b. Read through related objectives and pick one that relates to your chosen patient.
(Excluding anything adolescent or pediatric)
c. On the left hand side of the page you can access evidence based research related
to your objective. (These may be used as resources)
d. Identify 2 resources or agencies that would provide support for your patient.
(These can be local, regional, or national. Ex: American Diabetes Association)
e. Identify 2 nursing interventions to educate your patient on and be prepared to
explain their rationales.
2. Interview
a. Identify patient’s initials, age, occupation (if applicable), and health condition.
Be specific about your health condition. For example: Diabetes Type 1 or 2,
Rheumatoid arthritis, or osteoarthritis, etc.
b. What age was the onset of condition?
c. Is there an identified cause and if so, what is it?
d. What factors aggravate symptoms? What factors alleviate symptoms?
e. What treatments have they undergone in their past and what treatments are
they using currently?
i. Pharmacological
ii. Nonpharmacological
f. Identify what support system they have available to them, if any.
3. Interview Interventions
a. Educate your patient on support groups, resources, agencies (local, regional, or
national) (2)
b. Educate your patient on nursing interventions with rationales that could help
make life with their condition a little easier (2)
c. Thank them for participating in your assignment.
4. Paper – 12 pt font, double spaced, no more than 2 pages; Spelling, grammar and writing
style will be considered when grading.
a. Title page – Paper title (include health condition), your name, South Texas
College, course number (VNSG 1500), instructor, and due date *5 points
b. Interview questions with responses. (Write out what you said and what they
said). Numbered format is acceptable. Please make what is said by you bold for
clarity. *15 points
c. Paragraph 1 – In paragraph format describe your patient. Describe their
appearance and demeanor. Describe their health condition and their struggles
with it. *15 points
d. Paragraph 2 – Identify how simple or difficult it would be for your patient to
access your recommended support groups. Do you think they will utilize
them?*15 points
e. Paragraph 3 – What was your patients’ response to your nursing intervention
recommendations? Do you think they will utilize them? *15 points
f. Paragraph 4 – Give 1-2 examples of what the vocational nurse can do in their line
of work to prevent this health issue for future patients. Be specific. *15 points
g. Paragraph 5 – Do you feel you met the objective of this assignment? (Stated
above). Please explain with specific examples. *15 points
