What does it mean to be a culturally responsive teacher?
Read the entirety of chapter 3 in your books.
Your book defines culturally relevant teaching as an approach to instruction
founded on the belief in equity education and value of social justice. These are
topics that we will examine more closely in future weeks of this course.
Your book also states that culturally responsive teachers need to respond to the
sociocultural context of students and seek to integrate their cultural and social
capital, which includes student stories, role models, ethnic history, family sayings
and community issues.
What all of this means is that teachers need to make CONNECTIONS with their
students. The way to do that is to find out what is important to them and to their
families, and then use that information to build curriculum and relationships. This
is so very important, I can’t stress it enough!! Let the children share their cultures
and the things that are important to them. Bring their families in to the
classroom to teach the students about their cultures. Keep seeking to find out
more about your students, keep notes in a file so that you can remember
important information about each student.
Use the rest of this form as a study guide to help you process information in this
chapter.
