GMO has managed to evolve and grow over a period despite the constant criticism and bad reputation that is being portrayed the human population. The current amount of food that is being produced through genetically modified procedures has been improved on factors such as hunger and food security that have been dealt with through the excellent efficiency that is created through the genetically modified food. However, a disputable topic that has existed and has haunted the reputation that is associated with genetically modified food. There is an all-around general feeling that GMO poses a threat to the risk of health to its consumers and due to it unnatural nature and the fact diabetes stand a chance of increasing, even cancer and obesity are amongst the consumers it should be regulated. Therefore, it calls for a debate on whether various standards and regulations should be introduced on the production, consumption and the use of genetically modified foods and animals. A highly-tested hypothesis it can be stated that Genetically modified organisms that were created to prevent a potential food shortage in our country (Parekh, S.2010). As controversial that GMOs are, the improvement of crop creation and other foods which have been receiving assistance over the past decade. The fight for GMO labeling has intensified over time with the statistics from the state of California and Canada showing that more than eighty percent of the populations in these places want GMO products and food to be labeled for the sake of consumer knowledge and overall health consciousness.

Under the continuing use of GMO, one problem that is faced with is on food or crops that includes various risk to health that is posed by the use of different chemicals. The modification process of animals and plants that are produced for the consumption by humans have excessive use of chemical poses an inordinate amount of risk concerning health and its consumers. Statistics show that the effects when dealing with health are due to the products of genetically engineered whose impact on the world population which is due to general health. These studies also show that human health concerning GMO show that the overall health risks that are posed by GMO range from liver functioning, immune system, endocrine system, cancer potential and the general effects on the gut bacteria on human beings. In general, according to many scientists, the Genetically modified products triggers various primary conditions in the body of human beings hence opening up and weakening the immune system leading to the entry of other secondary level diseases and health conditions. These primary reactions by the body towards the introduction of genetically modified products include allergy, asthma and inflammatory reactions amongst the various groups of people. Organ damage and reproductive system complications are the key effects of GMO amongst animals such as livestock fed with GMOs in the long run.

Another factor and problem as a result of GMO are the various environmental impacts and pollutions as a result of the extensive use of GMO and its application. Numerous environmental concerns have been triggered regarding the use of GMO. In the process of using genetically engineered products on crops, various environmental agents might facilitate the transfer of the various genetically modified chemicals and crop products such as pollen to the neighboring crops and environments. These agents involve the use of wind and insects such as bees that transfer pollen from one crop to another encouraging the mixture of the GMO products with other crops in the environments leading to secondary impacts. Study, and recent statistics have shown how the roundup gene was found on a radius of 10 kilometers after its application at a single location leading to the worrying and concerning opinions of the effects the implementation and use of the chemicals spread to the neighboring locations bringing about a general effect and impact in unwanted environs. The use of the pesticide on weeds has created room for the rise of generally resistant weeds as an adaptation strategy leading to the resistance by GMO crops and the loss of effectiveness resulting to the creation of new strategies. In order to improve the effectiveness of the GMO crops in the long run, it therefore calls upon the scientists and researchers to be able to come up with a more effective solution in order to be able to manage and control the various environmental effects that come about due to the use of the GMO and new strategies on how to handle the resistant nature of the crops in adapting to new pesticide and chemically engineered solution in facilitating farming (Kjellsson, G.2001).

Lack of organic certification on the various foodstuffs being sold in stores may pose a significant problem in having to differentiate between the modified food and products and the organic natural products. This is also coupled by the fact that the government and the various authorities have failed in their mandate to endure that the genetically manufactured products in the shelves being sold to consumers are correctly labeled to ensure consciousness and knowledge of the fact that the food may pose a health risk. It can also be noted that the increasing amount of undocumented genetically engineered products may lead to complicated situations if in case the government would like to label and document them. The fact that the products that sit on the shelves today are over 30,000 categories makes it hard to be able to label them as genetically modified.

Some solutions have been floated on how the government should adopt and be able to deal with the various problems arising due to the excessive use of the genetically modified products; these suggestions have been contributed by researchers, scientists and common citizens who have been able to feel the effect of GMO. The various solutions include; the adoption of family farms and garden to encourage domestic consumption, more government involvement in the fight against the spread of genetic engineering adoption of more organic diets.

Solutions and Advantage

Genetically modified foods and animals have greatly improved the current production of food hence boosting the food security issues. The use of this technology will not only benefit the farmers but also the entire society. GMO has more disadvantages than the advantages, some of the disadvantages as discussed previously include; increased health problems, pollution and environmental impacts and also resistance to diseases due to overuse of pesticides and chemicals. Therefore, a viable solution to this problem is the adoption of home gardens. This is because the solution will give you a control over the products and chemicals that it will be used during the process of growing, positive environmental impact and improvement of consumer’s health.

Home gardens may take many forms, from having few plants in a container to the small or big gardens plots on your compound. Home gardens will help the gardener have his/her own homegrown crops and improve the cost of the gardening. Home gardens may vary according to the design and available space for example in-ground garden beds, raised or sunken garden beds (Eigenbrod, & Gruda, 2015).

The first advantage of this home garden is an improvement of the consumer’s health. Eating fresh crops from the garden is very important since it helps us stay healthy always. When crops are grown around you it will be easy to get accesses to them and it hence giving your body highest content of nutrient required. As compared to the genetically modified foods, sometimes they are not fresh therefore it cannot maintain the consumer’s health. (Tamiru, Argaw, Gerbaba, Nigussie, Ayana, Belachew, 2016). A genetically modified food causes a lot of health problems such as allergic reactions. This allergic reaction occurs as a result of a given protein that is present in the genetically modified crop introduced to the consumer’s body and kindles an immune response. Homegrown crops have high nutritional value since its nutritional value has not been altered like for those of genetically modified crops. Since genetic engineering only focuses on the increasing the production of the crop, making it more resistant to pests rather than the nutritional content. Studies do show that homegrown organic soybeans have higher dietary compounds such as healthy proteins, selenium, zinc, and sugars as compared to soybeans that are genetically modified.

The second advantage of homegrown crops is the environmental impact. A home garden gives the gardener a chance to make an advantageous impact on the environment. Making of compost using yard wastes and kitchen wastes products gives the garden nutrient-rich manure. This activity of compost manure making is an activity that most gardeners find it to relieve stress and relaxing hence it is more beneficial to the mental health (Taylor, Lovell, 2014). Compost manure help to maintain the levels of organic matter in the soil. Organic manure enhances the growth of essential bacteria in the soil that is important to the grown crops. Home gardens encourage biodiversity of crops this helps in the maintenance of soil fertility and biota. As compared to use of GMOs chemicals, the impact negatively to the environment. The use of Bacillus Thuringensis corn as a pest control chemical has a negative effect to the soil since it releases a lot of toxins that hinder the growth of important bacteria that is more essential to the growth of crops. This toxin makes the soil to lack nutrients that are essential. Long-term usage of GMOs that contain toxin will become ineffective over a period of time. This is because pests will develop resistance to this toxin hence this poses a negative impact on the environment. GM foods also pose a great risk to the biodiversity. Biodiversity is disrupted because most genetic engineering activities most of the times tend to favor a single organism. Introduction of these organisms that are genetically modified causes disruption of the gene flow naturally.

The third advantage of home gardens is control of products and chemicals to use during the growing season. Organic crops at the store cost more than the GMOs produce in the stores. Growing crops of your choice in the garden will give you control over the fertilizer and chemicals to use other than the use of the chemical that is harmful to the environment. Crops grown in the home garden will allow the consumer to pick it when it has ripened, unlike the GMOs crops on the stores that are harvested often before ripening period (Eigenbrod,& Gruda, 2015). Crops picked from the home garden are fresh and of good quality and flavor compared to GMO crops that are picked several days before being displayed in the market. Crops that are consumed while fresh from the garden tend to have a lot of nutrients hence they are healthier.

In conclusion, home gardening is the best solution to address the negative effects of GMO this is because home gardening gives the gardener control of the products and chemicals that it will be used during the process of growing, positive environmental impact and improvement of consumer’s health.
