I’d like you to take some time and contrast the old with the new. First, go look at the website for The New York Times (Links to an external site.) (link), often cited as the “gold standard” for newspapers (still has a printed version), and has been publishing continuously since 1851. Then, go check out

The Huffington Post (Links to an external site.)

(link), or “HuffPost” as it’s often called, which is seen as a “successful model” for the web (at least in terms of making profits), and was founded in 2005.

One major difference between the two is that The Times is a subscription-based service, where users can only get 10 free articles per month, before they must subscribe. HuffPost, on the other hand, is entirely free. The New York Times does it’s own original news reporting, while HuffPost is mostly a “news aggregator”, which links to various articles around the web, although they do some of their own original reporting. Of course another huge difference is The New York Times has been around since the 1800s and is one of the most elite and respected news organizations in the world, while HuffPost started as an online blog in the early 2000s and has slowly grown into a major news source and aggregator.

What do you think of the contrast between the two? How do they look, stylistically? How are their headlines written? What type of stories dominate their “front pages”? Who do you think the intended audience is? Which seems more focused on entertainment (like having “clickbait” or other sensational headlines)? Which seems more focused on factual news reporting? Which would you prefer to read regularly, if you had to choose?
