In the commentary: “Bollywood: Postmodernism’s Legacy to the INternational Dance World” by Drid Williams the author makes a lot of valid points on Bollywood’s impact on the Western world. The article ends stating “…Bollywood and its namesakes may distinguish themselves over time merely as the archetypes of plagiarized, computer-generated, imitative mishmash…” However, this is not a fair representation of Bollywood in my opinion. Bollywood is largely a product of society, like many things in life, and I believe that the tropes used throughout Hindi films will continued to be built upon and grow with Hindi culture. I think that both Bollywood and Hollywood will be looked back upon much like we look back on the classics. As the basis and the foundation of what later multimeda will become.

Indian has thrived and grown in this new globalized world. It is now one of the top three economies and its presence is known in media. Most global citizens have an impression of either Indian’s economic power or also its cultural impact. Matusitz and Payano have said diasporic audience of 10 million. However this audience has not reflected in large monetary sums. They also mention a term of “glocalisation.” Glocalisation represents innovative cultural hybrids and variations of norms and practices to cater to local preferences and tastes. Therefore Bollywood itself has been that hybrid of indian culture with american film. This term is representative of marketing the industry to position itself for members outside of physically being in India.
Despite its 10 million viewers, why do you think its such a low profit margin industry. Well we should take into concern, copyright and pirating within the global market. America has done a rather good job at protecting its media with the FBI and other agencies. However when it comes to foreign media this is not as regulated because it is not a U.S. good. Therefore the stake for the U.S. economy is not in play therefore there is very little motive to regulate it. If greater regulations were put in place, do you think India would earn a lot more or bollywood’s popularity would increase or decrease?
4. Bollywood has been a medium in which women can be portrayed in sexual natures not formerly allowed via nationalist values. Nijhawan describes the traditional scripts as portraying the female role as “Indian myths and discourse do not write of dancing women as especially ¡®bad¡¯ or ¡®wrong,¡¯ but rather undomesticated, either because of their ¡®nature¡¯ or through force of circumstance.” Dancing skill is attributed to a sexual nature rather than love. Many mythical stories have been warped to change the previous prominence of a female character and insert a more sexualized connotation. Such as in the role of the devadasi. The control of the female sexual narrative speaks volumes as to how gender roles are, and we should question them as people who intake the product of such narratives.
As a feminist with a particularly strong moral code, I find this control over the female narrative due to institutionalized patriarchy to be disgusting. I understand tradition, however, young women should have people to look up to who embody tradition but are not degraded to such low sexual innuendos. I see this problem not only in India but also Korean dramas as well. I don’t find the plots interesting and I won’t put my money towards it.
