SCC Communication Conflict and Climate Paper
Communication Conflict and Climate: Writing Prompt 3Chapters 11, 12 & 13
Assignment Directions Fall 2022
Put yourself into the following situation. You should consider one of your real-life friendships. When you write
your paper, the paper should be written as if this conflict actually occurred between you and your friend.
Coffee shop scenario: You and your friend Jake are having coffee at a local coffee shop. Jake invited you there
to talk about his girlfriend. The couple has been growing apart. You and your mate Skylar have been having
similar issues, so you think this is the perfect time to connect with Jake and talk things out.
Jake: Kate and I aren’t communicating anymore and she isn’t answering my texts. What do you think I
should do?
You: Maybe she just needs some space.
Jake: You’re probably right. What’s happening with you and Skylar?
You: Well, he won’t take me to meet his family, which hurts my feelings.
—Jake’s phone rings and he immediately picks it up because it is his girlfriend. Jake gets up and walks to
the bathroom. He comes back after a minute.–Jake: I have to go. Kate wants to talk.
You: Well, I wanted to talk.
Jake: Oh, well, uh, Skylar’s family probably isn’t that fun anyway. Skylar is pretty lame. Gotta go. See ya.
—You are left alone and Jake even left his coffee cup and muffin. You sigh and clean up the table.–Based on the example above, write a 3-4 page paper in which you analyze the expectancy violation between
you and your friend, the conflict management strategies used and the communication climate . Also, you will
re-write the dialogue using healthy communication exchanges, considering diverse perspectives on the
situation.
