UO Non Verbal Ques in Communication Project
OBJECTIVE:
Select a clip between 0:50 – 0:60 seconds long of interaction and analyze the non-verbal
communication in the clip. The clip that has been selected is from the show The Office: Season 3,
Episode 10 the clip is at 25:59. This is the YouTube link for this one and it’s the last minute.
Non-Verbal Communication Behaviour: All of these need to be coded
Kinesics: Facial expressions (gaze and affect) and body movements (illustrators, regulators,
adaptors, and body orientation)
Proxemics: Personal space and interpersonal distance (zones and violations)
Haptics: Physical touch
Oculesics: Eye movements and gaze behaviour
Vocalics: Vocal properties and silence.
Chronemics: Response latency and time.
Olfactics: Smells (on bodies or in the environment)
Physical Appearance: artifacts and adornments
Environment: Fixed and semi-fixed features, light, and colour
The exact form and organization of your coding will depend on the nature of the clips you have
chosen. Some behaviours will likely be coded on a timeline (i.e., kinesics haptics, etc.) whereas
others (i.e., physical appearance, environment) may be coded separately as they do not change
within the clip. You can organize your coding however you want; however, you will be evaluated
based on the level of detail and organization.
STEP 2: ANALYZE AND INTERPRET THE NON-VERBAL CODES
Interpret the non-verbal communication used in your clips. You have some flexibility in how you
approach this, but will be evaluated based on the quality of the arguments you can build. Some
potential questions could guide your analysis: What was the likely intended meaning? Did the nonverbal communication help or hinder the verbal communication? Was the message clearly
communicated? Did the receiver receive the message? Were there any instances of
miscommunication?
